LIVING COSTS REDUCED.

It is now 11 years since Mr B. Sutherland, the founder of the Self Help Co-op. commenced his service as a distributor of groceries to the New, Zealand housewives. From one small shop at the commencement, the movement has grown to 140 stores throughout the Dominion. The figures now available show to what a tremendous extent the founder has assisted the New Zealand public. Before the Self Help came into operation, fabulously high grocery prices existed; tremendous profits were made on all goods, including staple lines such as butter, sugar and flour. With the introduction of the Self Help, grocery prices were lowered by 20 per cent, and even more on some high profit lines. The savings made on all purchases in Self Help stores throughout the past 11 years are enormous, amounting on a reliable estimate to the tivmendous figure of £1,000,000. This huge saving has allowed housewives to purchase other goods and benefits for the home, thus giving them greater comfort and satisfaction. This £1,000,000 has been expended in many channels so that all sections of the community have benefited and employment has been created which otherwise would not have existed.
