CONSTABLE’S HOUSE.

GISBORNE, March 19.
A five-roomed house at Motu, occupied by Constable Baskin, who, with Mrs. Baskin, had been absent on leave for some weeks, was destroyed by fire. Nothing was saved. The house was owned by E. Derecourt.
FIRE AT TAKAKA.
NELSON, March 17.
At 11.45 o’clock last night fire destroyed the business premises owned by Mr N. Trent, in the main street at Takaka. The ground floor was occupied by Mr A. F. Bell, ladies’ outfitter, and the stock was partly saved. The upper storey was occupied by the owner, a dentist, who lost everything.
MARLBORO’ BUSH FIRES.
BLENHEIM, March 17
An abnormally dry season resulted in a further series of bush fires in many beautiful Marlboro’ Sounds reserves. Fitzgerald Bay has been burnt out. Edgecombe Point, at the entrance to Endeavour Inlet was partly burnt, and the fire is still raging. The well-known Double Bay reserve was saved only after a desperate fight. The Picton hills reserve at the back of the town, was partly burnt. The Department is urging settlers not to burn their' grass country in the vicinity of reserves in such an abnormal dry season.
