SWIMMING. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] MASTERTON, March 18. J. K. Thwaites, a 17-year-old Lyall Bay swimmer, won the Wellington provincial 880 yards title at the carnival held here on Saturday. Jack Barnes, of Masterton, was second and N. Milligan, of Lyall Bay, third. Thwaites won by 30 yards, while Barnes headed Milligan only by a touch. The unofficial time was 12min 47sec. HASTINGS, March 17. The national long plunge record was broken by C. Atkinson at a swimming carnival at Napier last evening. The distance was 66ft 10in., which is Ift 4in better tlian the previous figures. D: P. Lindsay (Dannevirke) broke the Hawke’s Bay 440 yards record of ‘5.46 1-5, by 5 2-ssec., doing the distance in 5.39 4-5. NGARUAWAHIA REGATTA. HAMILTON, March 17. The annual Ngaruawahia Regatta was held to-day, drawing thousands of people from a wide area. The association was honoured with a visit of the Governor-General and Lady Bledislbe. Representatives of the Waikato, Rotorua and Maniapotoi tribes gathered in full force to extend a rousing welcome to Their Excellencies, who were met on arrival by Mr R. Eyre, Mayor of Ngaruawahia; Mr D. S. Reid, M.P.; Princess Te Puea Herangi and others. The' usual programme of rowing events, Maori contests, Highland dancing and piping was decided. CYCLING. TIMARU, March 18. The fifty miles South Island Road Cycling Championship was decided on Saturday in dismal weather. The race was won by a young Chinese rider, P. Lee, in 2hr. 13min. 30 l-ssec. W. Rae was second, and J. Metcalfe was third. The fastest time went to A. Higginbottom, namely 2hr. 4min. 44 2-ssec. KANIERI POWER BOATS. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] HOKITIKA, March 19. The Kanieri Power Boat Club held the final series of thb Teichelmann Cup races on Lake Kanieri during the week-end.’ The weather and water conditions were perfect. The results of the racing were': — First heat: Country Boy 1, Pit-a-Pat 2, Buzz Off 3. Second heat: Country Boy 1, Pita-Pat and Happie Moments 2, equal, Buzz Off 3. Thrid heat: Happie Moments 1, M6rrie Moments 2, Hop Along 3, The four-lap race resulted: Happie Mqments 1, Hop Along 2, Merrie Moments 3. The result of the season’s races is Pit-a-Pat 1, Happie Moments 2, Country Boy 3. DOBSON SOCCER CLUB. The annual meeting of the Dobson Soccer Club was held yesterday, in the Dobson Hall, there being a good attendance. The balance sheet, which showed a small credit, was read' and adopted. Officers were elected as follow:—President, Mr A. Mooney; secretary, Mr T. Glendinnihg; committee, Messrs T. Muhphy, G. Bolam, J. Norrie; delegates, Messrs Glendinning and Bolam. Arrangements were made for a long-night dance on Friday next.
GREYMOUTH GOLF CLUB. Members and intending members are notified that the annual general meeting of the Greymo'uth Golf Club will be held in Mr Fogarty’s rooms next Thursday, at 8 o’clock. Important matters are to be discussed and a full attendance is requested. The Club’s new property at Kaiata is receiving the attention of Mr J. Cairney, and should be in first class order for opening day.
