LONDON WOOL SALES.

LONDON, March 16.

At the wool sales, 5866 bales were offered, of which 5138 were New Zealand. About 5000 were sold. New Zealand greasy crossbred Waiheke top 15|d, average 12Jd. Slips half-uje lambs w.f.m. eighteen 16 5-Bd. Prices closed firm, compared with February closing. Merino broader hair styles were barely 5 per cent, lower, scouied fleece bulky pieces unchanged. Short scoureds declined’ 5 per cent., carbonising wools 5 per cent., crossbreds fine 5 per cent., medium coarse 10 per cent., slipes medium coarse •> per cent., fine unchanged. The total catalogued was 76,396 bales, and sold —Home 32,000, Continent 34,000; held over 52,000. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH, March 16. There is little change in the potato market. Very little is offering at cuirent quotations as farmers considei that next month should bring miich more inquiry. A small lot is going north by the Wingatui this week, bu it is too early for shipment in bulk without risking damage. A general frost which occurred during the week will assist to overcome this disability. The frost, however, cut back the tops of the later sown crop and will possibly have the same effect on the yield. There is very little Northern inquiry at the moment. Whites aie quoted for May-June at £4/2/6 to £4/5/- a ton f.o.b.s.i. and Dakotas at £4/10/-, the equivalent respectively of £3 and £3/5/- a ton on trucks. The onion crop is now being gathered and heavy yields are the rule. The market is very dull and prices on trucks are no better than 35/- a ton. it is understood that’ there is some export under the Government’s guarantee against the loss scheme. The limitation of quantity is 750 tons. ; Fowl wheat is worth 3/4 f.o.b.s.e. for prompt and 3/5J to 3/6 f.o.b.s.e. fot April-September. There is no inquiry for oats. Sniall business continues in the seed trade, with no change in prices. BUTTER AND CHEESE. Copy of cablegram received by Dalgety and Co., Ltd., from their London office, dated March 16: — Butter: Market firm. Danish 88/to 90/-, New Zealand finest 71/- to 72/-, Australian finest unsalted 68/to 70/-, salted 68/- to 70/-, G.A.Q. 64/to 66/-. Cheese: Market firm. New Zealand white 43/- to 44/-, coloured 44/-; Canadian white and coloured 52/- to 56/-.

STOCKS AND SHARES. DUNEDIN, March 17. Sales reported: Waihi Grand Junction 4/8 (two). MATAKI DREDGE. The Mataki report is as follows: — The dredge continues to work well, there being no delays of any moment. The wash is improving and now carries’fair prospects. All going well we •should be ready to turn upstream by the epd of this week. At present the weather is unsettled, but the river is keeping steady. Should we get a. rise in the river all is ready to turn the upstream. The outlook is now much more promising and if the wash continues to improve at the present rate we should soon be on good gold. WAIHI G.M. CO. [special to “star.”] WAIHI, March 16. The following information has been cabled to London. No. 4 level, drive east on the north branch of Martha lode. Thp next six feet assays 11/- per ton. The width of the vein varies from 8 to 15 inches. Driving is suspended. Drive south on Edward lode the next 40 feet is ore of good grade. The lode is about three feet wide. No. 5 level, drive west on north branch of Martha lode. The next 37 feet is ore of good grade. At 470 feet vzest, we have crosscut to the north, exposing the full width of the lode which is 18 feet of good grade. The dip of the lode is one in one and a half. North Martha lode at 543 feet west, the full width of the lode is 23 feet. Assay value 6/6 per ton. No. 12 level, 70 feet sub level, the drive north on Edward lode is suspended at 118 feet. We propose opening up at No. 12 level.
