To-day’s Racing News

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME.

March 17—Ohinemuri. March 16, 17—Wellington. March 17—Birchwood Hunt Club. March 17 —Opunake. March 21—Opotiki. March 21,22 —Manawatu. March 23, 24 —Oamaru. March 24—Otautau. March 24, 26—Bay of Plenty. March 24, 26—Westport. March 31—Hawke’s-Bay.

A Good Performer: Jonathan will have quite a lot of friends if started in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie at the end of the month. He is a great galloper.

Early Winner: Allegretto ran a good race at Te Rapa. This was his first race since competing at the Auckland summer meeting, where he ran third in the Ellerslie Handicap, one mile. He should improve a good deal with a bit of racing.

Royal Appellant: Has run good honest races, and though his success last Saturday only makes his second victory he will only have to keep sound to increase his winning record before the two-year-old season is through.

May Go to Trentham: The Nigger Minstrel gelding Copper King is now racing very solidly, and may be taken to Trentham to contest the Autumn Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, to-morrow. Copper King is a good' stayer, and in his present condition should win more races. Callamart:

Is now coming to his best, and he should take a hand in important jumping events from now on. He is engaged in the Brighton Hurdle Race, two miles, at Ellerslie at Easter. A Fit Horse:

Crpachan is now right up in the weights, and it would not surprise to see his attention confined to flat racing in the future. He is a very fit horse at present.

Should Not Be Long: Sinking Fund about at his best again, and it should not be long before he is again on the winning list.

At His Best Again: L’Allegro showed a return to his best form at Te Rapa on Saturday. L’Allegro was strongly supported for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie last year and followed the winner, Golden Wings, who led all the way, into the straight, eventually finishing sixth. He later won the -Foley Memorial at Avondale, and is engaged in both these events again this season.

Deserved Win: Roman Mascot ran two solid races at the Waikato meeting last week, only to be beaten in both of them. She is very well just now and she was rather unlucky not to collect the chief end of a stake before yesterday.

Valuable Brood Mare Dies: The "well-known breeder and owner of thoroughbreds, Mr M. H. Timms, suffered a stroke of misfortune this week, when one of his best brood mares, Kilbeggan, died after an attack of colic. Kilbeggan is best known as the dam of Karapoti.

Good Jumper: J. Ayres, who trains Te Ua, has received another horse from Mr F. S. Easton, a broken foiir-year-old by Acre from a Strowan mare. He can not only show pace but is a splendid jumper.

Youngsters Named: The Iliad —Fleeting colt, who was bought at the yearling sales by Major P. Kerr Smiley for 550 gs, has been named Carrickore. The two-year-old brother to Davolo, owned by Mr P. F. Campbell, has been named Rovolo. The colt by Lord Quex—Table Talk, secured by Messrs Akers and Hughes, Palmerston North, for 225g5, will be raced as Corroboree. The two-year-old gelding by Hoylake—Arrowshield has had the name First Course bestowed on him.

Patient Policy: The two-year-old Friday Night has been left in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, but he will not be sent to Auckland, his appearance in the list being du,e to an oversight. The brother to Phar Lap looks well, and he appears to be getting over the trouble that has affected him for some time. He may be given a race at Riccarton at Easter, but his owner is disposed to continue a patient policy, so it is possible the colt will not be raced at all this season. Surprise Winner:

Good Cheer, surprise winner of the Tapuata Hack Handicap at Woodville last Saturday, has not had a very heavy racing career, despite her eight years, and it is quite probable that there are further winning efforts in her yet. She looks a type of mare who might make good' as a jumper. Saturday’s was actually her first success, but after a few starts as a three and four-year-old she was off the scene till a couple of months ago.

Luck Turns for Palm: The win of the two-year-old Palm at Woodville on Saturday was by the narrowest of imaginable margins, but it was undoubtedly a most deserved success. It capped a sequence of minor placings, any one of which might have been a winning effort with a shade of luck. Only W. J. Broughton’s extremely vigorous riding landed her home on Saturday. PLACINGS ALTERED.

WELLINGTON, March 15.

In the decision of the New Zealand Racing Conference Judges in connection with the appeal by W. Wilson, owner of Gainsfid, against the decision of the Hawke’s Bay District Committee in reversing the judge’s placings of Gainsfid, the winner, and Little Wonder,, the second horse, in the President’s Handicap, run at Wairoa Racing Club’s race meeting on January 27, 1934, it is held that, as R. G. Fenton, owner of Little Wonder, had not obtained permission from the Executive Committee to train his own horse, as required by the Rules of Racing, the horse Little Wonder is, therefore, disqualified, and the placings are therefore:—Gainsfid 1, Stitch 2, Kinsel 3. The Judges remark: “It is only fair to the Hawke’s Bay District Committee for us to state that this point was not considered at the time that the Committee altered the placings.”

RACING AT ROSEHILL.

SYDNEY, March 15

For Rosehill races on Saturday acceptors in the Rawson Stakes are:— Chatham 9.2, Peter Pan 9.0, Rogilla 8.13, Lough Neagh 8.13, Blixteil 8.4. For the Railway Handicap the topweight is Rogilla with 10.0. Silver Scorn has 9.7, and has also accepted.

DEATH OF KING’S HORSE.

LONDON, March 15

The King’s stud at Sandringham suffered a severe loss in the death of a famous mare, Scuttle, His Majesty s only clasic winner, after the birth of a foal by Lord Glanely’s St. Leger winner, Singapore. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. Mar. ” 17 —Cheviot. ” 17, 24— -Wanganui. ” 23—South Otago. ” 24 —Roxburgh. ” 31 & April 2—Hawera.

At Wanganui: F. J. Smith has arrived, at Wanganui with his team, Anita Fame, Worthy Light, Lislea and Bell Heather, while he will also have charge of Donum, whose owner, C. Moran, cannot attend the meeting.

pink Lady: Has joined S. August’s stable at Mangarir'i. Pink Lady has only started on three occasions, but has displayed plenty of speed, and August should be able to place her to advantage on the country circuit.

To Compete at Thames: Ngingongingo is being kept in strong work with a view to contesting the Thames Trotting Cup, and _ the son of Matchlight is going along in a style that suggests he is quite free from soreness. Likes Dirt Track:

Moko Girl gave two inglorious displays at her last couple of starts and there does not appear much doubt that she is not at home on grass tracks. When working on the dirt track Moko Girl trots very solidly and never makes a semblance of a mistake, whether -worked with pacers or trotters. The first time she trots solidly there should be no doubt about what -will win.

Over Longer Distance: Bonnie Direct has paid her way -well since being secured from Christchurch last season, and the Hamilton owner-trainer, C. Moran intends trying her over two miles in forthcoming engagements. Up to date she has only raced over middle distances, but has always shown plenty of staying power at the end of her races, and there is no reason why she should not see out two miles.

Worthy Light for Wanganui: The promising young pacer, Worthy Light is working along in pleasing style at Takanini, and’ F. J. Smith is taking him down to Wanganui with a View to contesting the Wanganui Trotting Cup. Worthy Light is set a hard task in being asked to concede 48yds start in his first attempt over two miles, but he is such a solid customer and good beginner that the chances are that he will be up in a good position before the field has gone a mile.

Kibo Coming On: Kibo, a winner at Wyndham, is a six-year-old by Blue Mountain King from Evelyn Wilkes. It is only recently that she has shown any form, but she is making rapid progress and will soon be in a better class;

Fairhaven at Last: Fairhaven scored a well-deserved victory at Wyndham. She has been racing very consistently of late without enjoying any luck. Now that fortune has turned her face towards her, she should be a good proposition.

Failed Again: Blue Mountain Queen was beaten again at Wyndham. Made first favourite, she failed to get in the money in the Cup. When seen at. Invercargill she was not at her best, and evidently is still off colour.

Improving Trotter: Journey’s End made a step nearer to good company by winning at Wyndham. He did not have a good class opposed him, but in his few starts he has impressed as one above the average.

Nelson Pointer’s Best: Nelson Pointer, winner' of the Wyndham Cup, has disappointed his connections on several occasions, but, driven by S. A. Edwards at Wyndham, he paced his best race to date, and is evidently on the up-grade. It is more than likely that he will join a. Canterbury stable in the near future.

M. Holmes’s Mixed Luck:

M. Holmes got Goldfield home first at Wyndham, but his other two charges, Gold Claim and Raywood, did not perform so creditably. Gold Claim ran third, but was beaten by a good margin, while Raywood failed to finish in the money in his event. Indianapolis Under a Cloud:

All is not well with the four-year-old pacer, Indianapolis, who has developed a filling in the near fore-leg and lias had to be eased in his work. W. J . Tomkinson, his trainer, has stated that he did not like the big gelding’s chance of starting in the match races, against Walla Walla although he was not prepared to express a definite opinion. The filling in the leg might not be serious, hut he considered it inadvisable to give Indianapolis any serious work owing to the risk of breaking him down. In two or three days the Addington trainer will be in a position to give a definite opinion on the prospects of Indianapolis.

CHEVIOT MEETING. FIELDS FOR TO-MORROW. The Cheviot Trotting Club has received excellent entries for its annual meeting, which takes place to-morrow. The following horses are expected to be prominent in their respective engagements:— Trial Handicap: Portlight, Sky Wink, Happy Bird. Domett Handicap: Header, Kotinga, Ganton. Cheviot Cup: Young Travis, Jimmy de Oro, Olive Rey. Mina Handicap: Harvestin, Grace McElwyn, Happy Bird. Spotswood Handicap: Portlight, Charteris Vale, Realeen. ACCOMPANIED BY AUBURN LAD. Walla Walla’s much-looked-for appearance at Addington was brought a step nearer when that horse and Auburn Lad were, landed at Lyttelton yesterday morning. Mr L. S. Martin, owner and trainer of Walla Walla, Mr W. McKay, owner and trainer of Auburn Lad, and Mrs F. Bowden, a

friend from Victoria, received a warm welcome on the wharf from several trotting enthusiasts who had journeyed to the port to greet the visitors (says “The Sun”). Mi* Martin stated that the weather had been rough for the first day and a-half from Australia, but on the whole they had enjoyed a reasonably good trip. Walla Walla had stood up to the travelling well, but he did not do as well on the journey as he usually does. Auburn Lad made a. firstclass trip. Auburn Lad was first on deck. A bright, bay, and showing a great deal of quality, he looked very fresh. Auburn Lad, with a record of 2.9|, has some high-class performances and a faster race record than his travelling companion. He has been nominated for the Easter, Flying, President’s, and Final Handicaps at the coming Metropolitan meeting, and will attract much' attention.

Walla Walla, also a. boy, is a. different type frohi Auburn Lad, but looks the part of a champion. He has lightened up during the trip, but he should not be long before he is back to his best.

Walla. Walla raced on the Monday previous to leaving Australia, and so he is well forward. W. McKay is the leading reinsman in Victoria, for the present season; in fact, he has topped the list several times in recent years. He is recognised as one of Australia’s best horsemen, and so the visiting horses should lose nothing on the score of reinsmanship. While it is not certain that McKay will handle Walla Walla, in the invitation races, Mr Martin stated that as McKay was the lighter, he would most likely be behind both horses. Martin has handled Walla Walla in all that horse’s races to date.

Walla Walla has not only made a. name for himself as a racehorse, but also as a. sire. He has left several good ones, the latest of which is the three-year-old Wirra Walla, who is spoken of as a. magnificent type of a youngster, and the makings of a great horse.

Mr Martin, who owns between 40 and 50 horses, has driven some of Walla Walla’s progeny to victory in classic events, and considers that Walla Walla will prove to be as great a sire as he is a racehorse.
