PLAY’S £l00,000 IN A YEAR

I WOMAN AUTHOR’S SHYNESS. This evening “Richard of Bordeaux” reaches its first anniversary at the New Theatre (wrote George W. Bishop, on February 2, in the London “Daily Telegraph.”) Since it opened on February 2, 1932. the play has been a consistent success, and Mr Bronson Albery, joint managing director of the Wyndham Theatres, told me yesterday that the year’s takings have amounted to nearly £lOO,OOO. The actual net box-office figures, up to.last Saturday, are £95,797. The authoress, who writes under the name of “Gordon Daviot,” will not be present this evening. She was invited, of course, but in her charming note of apology she explained that it was impossible to come to London, as she was engaging a new servant! .

Very few people except those'intimately. connected with the play have seen “Gordon Daviot,”. who was formerly a school teacher, and now lives in a cottage in Invernessshire. -She came to some of the lake rehearsals of her play, and on the first night slipped away and went quietly back to her hotel. As. I was was able to announce earlier in the week, she has now written another play (her second) on Mary, Queen.of Scots, entitled “Mary Stuart.” It has been acquired by the “Richard of Bordeaux” management.
