WILD BEASTS
RUSSIAN ORDER TO KILL. MOSCOW, January 26. The Red Army has been ordered to destroy every tiger, wolf, bear, lynx and jackal in the entire Soviet Union. This will be an extraordinary task in view of the enormous extent of Soviet territory. Special "liquidation” squads of sol-dier-hunters are to be trained forthwith for this massacre. It must be supposed, however, that some few of these "pernicious beasts” will be temporarily spared for foreign trippers to destroy. “Intourist,” the Saviet State Travel Agency, which accepts only foreign currency continues to advertise ‘‘hunting parties” on inclusive daily terms plus a lump sum in foreign money for each animal “liquidated.” About £9, it is stated, will be paid, for instance, for each wolf killed, and about £3O for each bear.
Successful “liquidations” seem to be assured, for the Intourist’s pamphlet says:
“The usual method of hunting bear in winter is by stalking. Animals are driven out of their dens only to come up against expectant hunters, each concealed in his numbered place.” Each party will be accompanied by a professional hunter “having dozens of bears and sometimes hundreds of wolves to his credit’’ to keep them out of danger.
