The four first horses in the opening day’s hurdle race finished in the same order in the Owhiro Hurdles Handicap. Rasouli took charge at the home turn, closely followed by The Rector, Fleet, ing Glance, Sunward and Don Jose. Rasouli was first over the last fence, and went on to again score easily, from Fleeting Glance, who . got up to beat The Rector by a neck. Sunward was close up next, in front of Don Jose, Rameses and Rational 11. Dividend of Over £100:
St. Joan was sent out favourite for the Novice Stakes, but after getting away well, and being one of the leading division for two furlongs, she got squeezed right back to a rear position, and had her chance settled. Silver Lark had charge at the home turn, from Half Note, Dodge, Red Dance, Wild Sky, and Jacobin. Silver Lark Was first into the straight from Dodge, Jacobin, Red Dance and Osculate. Dodge was in charge at the distance, and ran home a comfortable winner from Jacobin, who narrowly beztt the fast-finishing Osculate. Sungem was a neck away next, in front of Red Dance, Silver Brier and St. Joan. The winner paid over a century, which is the biggest dividend ever recorded at Wingatui. He cost the late Mr. Greenwood 1300 guineas as a yearling, and was sold to his present owner at a sale at Wingatui for 65 guineas. Hula Bell Surprises:
The result of the Flying Handicap also sprung a surprise on investors. The finish was confined to the moderately supported Hula Belle, and Guarantee, both of whom were slow to move off. Silver Streak and Master Anomaly were first prominent, but at the end of a furlong Kerbside was out clear of Mobile, Master* Anomaly and Guarantee. The last-named joined Kerbside at the home turn, and was first into the straight from her, Hula Belle and Silver Streak. In an interesting finish, Hula Belle wore down Guarantee to beat him comfortably by half a length. Silver Streak hung on gamely to gain third money, three lengths away, just in front of Fair Weather. with lan’s March and Mobile next. The Smuggler’s Prize:
Ventrac was sent out a staunch favourite for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, but after leading round the far turn, and following The Smuggler into the straight he gradually retired, to a rear position. The early leaders were Ventrac and Red Racer, who ran through the back stretch clear of Kemal Pasha, Cough, The Smuggler, Davolo and King March. The Smuggler worked his way to the front rounding the home turn, and was first into the straigth from Ventrac, Davolo, King March and Cough. Nothing had a
chance with him for the remainder of the journey, and he recorded a decisive win from King March, who headed Davolo a few strides from the post. Red Sun came from well back to be placed fourth, and then came Cough, Kemal Pasha, Toreador, Salmo Salar, Black Duke, Ventrac and Red Racer.
Silver Sight Gets Up: The Greymouth-owned Silver Sight scored a creditable win in the Abbotsford Handicap. He was not at all prominent for the first six furlongs, but improved his position ‘rounding the turn into the straight, and when Cleaner, Signaller and Venite were engaged in a hard finish fifty yards from the post, Silver Sight pushed his way through on the rails and got up to beat Cleaner decisively. Venite was a good third in front of Palmary, who was a long way back in last place at the end of two furlongs. Dismiss Again: In the Hopeful Handicap, Cup Bearer and Dismiss quickly opened up a big gap from Marcus Cicero, and were four lengths in front of him at the straight entrance. Dismiss gradually drew away from Cup Bearer inside the distance, and appeared to have another easy win in view, but he had to be ridden right out to stall off a solid challenge from Marcus Cicero, who executed a telling effort from the top of the straight, and only just missed heading the leader, who was being eased up on the post. Cup Bearer was three lengths away, with a big gap to Trumpet Blast and Wonderful.
Silver Ring’s Gold Cup: Silver Ring monopolised speculation in the James Hazlett Gold Cup. He recorded the easiest win of the meeting. The field moved off in a bunch, but after two furlongs had been covered Croupier showed, out, and was later joined by Silver Ring. The pair gradually drew away and were four lengths in front of Southdown at the home turn, with the other two close up. Silver Ring had Croupier beaten turning for home, and was out some six lengths in front at the distance. He was not again called on and was being eased up at the post. Croupier was in trouble a furlong from home, and Chhota easily beat him. Mobile was well back, with Southdown tailed off.
Pink Paper Takes Last: Tizzy essayed to repeat her first day’s success by being first away in the concluding event, and piloting the field to the home turn, but she then gave way to Pink Paper, who led into the straight from Norman Conquest, Broken Rule, Repudiation and Amenta. Pink Paper had th© race in hand from that stage, and won easily from Heather Glow, who worked his way through the field from a rear position, and got up to beat Amelita by a head, with a similar distance to Repudiation and Doiran, who were together, with Broken Rule next.
