CRICKET

DISTRICT COMPETITIONS. BRIGHT CENTURY BY PASCOE. Splendid weather again favoured cricketers during the week-end, and competition matches provided interesting play. At the Recreation Grounds, Star and Runanga gave an exhibition of fast and forceful scoring, 507 runs being posted during the afternoon. Batsmen attacked the bowling, the fieldsmen of both sides being kept on the move. P. Pascoe, who went for a “duck” in Star s firs innings, treated spectators to the best display of hard-hitting seen on the grounds. He was not particular as to his strokes, throwing care aside, and pasting every bowler to score 103 before being dismissed. With assistance from other batsmen, who also went after runs, Pascoe placed Star in a winning position, but time arrived before the Runanga “tail” could be dismissed. Runanga also scored quickly in their first innings, hitting up 166 with powerful strokes. Runanga won on the first •innings. Star again showed themselves as a second-innings team. On No. 1 Wicket at the Recreation Grounds, United defeated Cobden in a slow-scoring game. Marist, after being behind on the first innings with Kumara, dismissed the latter for 21 runs in the second innings, to secure three points, and improve their lead in the A Division. Cobden B won from Brunner, this match also providing fast scoring, 425 runs being collected. In the Saturday Competition, IJnited beat Cobden, to place the three teams in this competition level, each having secured four points. The Third Grade matches were won by Cobden, and Technical. ,

UNITED AND COBDEN A. The wicket was in splendid order at the Recreation Grounds, for the match between United and Cobden A. Having first use of the wicket did not strengthen Cobden’s chances of victory, for the team gave a weak showing. Rapley secured the first four Wickets cheaply, the batsmen failing to get set. W. Barlow make a great effort to hold up the qujch-falling wickets, and' in scoring 33 he played an attractive and sound innings. A. Vaughan was the only other batsman to reach double figures. The bowling from United was not strong, but the batting strength of Cobden, since T. Mclntosh’s enforced retirement has been weak. United opened' with Rapley and Restieaux; who were slow in making a score, their defensive play being flattering to the bowlers. Later they brightened the game with quick scoring, and had 43 runs on before Restieaux was dismissed. The fourth wicket partnership of McLaughlin and Heasley passed Cobden’s score. Heaslay and McKay played well, forcing the pace, and building up the total quickly. Knowles again proved his worth as a bowler, securing six wickets for 50 runs. It was an easy win for United. three-pointer to marist. Marist secured a three-point _ win over Kumara. yesterday. The wicket was a little on the fiery, side, and the faster bowlers were always on top. Marist won the toss and fielded, I umara scoring 78. Faulkner 17, and McLean 14, were the highest scoreis. Both played confidently, and were both dismissed in pulling across straight balls. Cornish secured the bowling honours, taking 5 wickets ioi 23 off 15 overs. Marist, who opened with some of their younger batsmen, were "all dismissed for 62, sixteen runs behind Kumara s total. Ine home team deserved the advantage, for their fielding and team work was good Greatbach was the most successful bowler taking five wickets for 21. Kumara collapsed before the Marist bowlers, in their second strike, and were all out tor -1 • (McLean not out 7). L. Casey <j toi •• Mathews three for 8, and O. Morris two for none, were backed up well by keen work in the field.
