Returns for the first six months of the current financial year show a favourable Commonwealth trade balance of £24,101,000, largely due to the improved values of wool. HIGH-PRICED GOLD. MELBOURNE, February 10. The Electrolytic Smelting Company, Port Kembla, this week secured the highest price ever paid in Australia for gold, a net return of £B/12/5 per fine ounce to a few fortunate producers. FOOTBALLER’S DEATH. SYDNEY, February 9. James Davis, a former international footballer, was found dead in a paddock at Parkes. There were gashes on both wrists, and in his throat, but no sign of the weapon with which the wounds were inflicted. Davis represented New South Wales against New Zealand and against the Maoris in 1908-9.
