AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS

ANOTHER REPLACEMENT. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY, February 9. The Australian cricket team for New Zealand has been further weakened by the withdrawal of Clem Hill. Surprise is expressed at the player chosen to replace him, E. R. Wyeth, a slow bowler, who has played only two Sheffield Shield games for Queensland. M.C.C. MEMBERSHIP SYDNEY, February 1. There is a man in Sydney just ?ow who, when he was a boy, went to an English public school. Thirty-fiotxr years ago his father, with an eye to the future, nominated him for membership in the Marylebone Cricket Club. A fortnight ago he received a letter from the secretary of the M.C.C., from which I extract the relevant sentences: “In the years 1901-5, inclusive, 3693 names were entered in the candidates' book of M.C.C., and among them your name appears. Experience has shown that, for one reason or another, a considerable number of candidates nearly 30 years ago are unable to take up membership. To enable a more accurate estimate to be made of probable candidates for election in the near future, the committee would be glad if you would let me know whether you desire to take up membership when your name is reached.” The Sydney man answered at once — as he said, if he did not send a prompt reply his name might go back to “the end of the queue,” and he would have to wait another 34 years. To clinch matters, he also enclosed cheque for entrance fee (£5) and annual subscription (£3), so now he and his friends are awaiting developments and hoping for the best. This little story seems to throw some light on the keenness of the competition for a “place” in the M.C.C.

Star v. Runanga at Recreation ground (No. 2) to-morrow: Mullins, Nelson, Mosley, Reynolds, Morrison, Pascoe, Goodall, Thomson, Mills, Wilde, Smith.
