GREY MAIN SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING. The Grey Main School Committee met last evening, there.being present: Messrs R. A. Barrowman (chairman), H. Herring, J. Tennent, R. J. Williams, J. C. H. McDonald, A. J. Fairmaid, A. V. Oliver, and W. G. Scott (secretary). In response to a request from the Trades’ Picnic Committee, it was decided to grant a school holiday on February 2S, the occasion ot the annual Trades’ picnic. The Secretary said that the Headmaster . had told him that-£A-on-£AQ. worth of books would be required this year for. children, Whose parents were unable to afford the books. It was a question whether the Board’ should be asked for the required sum or whether the Committee should pay the amount cut of its own funds. Mr Tennent said that considering the Committee’s straitened finances, he thought application should be made lo th& Board. The matter was left to the Chairman, who is to interview the Chairman of the Board. It was decided to ask the Board to install a new cooking range in the caretaker’s cottage. The Chairman intimated that the basketball coprt, which had been rather badly damaged by falling debris during the repair work at the school, was being attended to by the Board’s foreman. The Chairman reported that the West Coast School Association was now established, as the result of efforts made by the Blackball Committee. A number of committees had already signified their intention of joining up, and the rules and constitution of the Association were at present being printed. The subscriptions, ranged from 5/- to £l/1/- according to the size of the school. The Main School Committee’s fee would be £1 1/-. He moved 1 that the. Main School Committee affiliate with the WestCoast School Committees’ Assd.cia’tibn,The motion was seconded by Mr Williams and carried. The Chairman asked, the Secretary what was the position regarding Tree
exercise books issued to school children by the business people of the town. The Secretary said he received an account, the other clay for 157- for cartage on the free exercises for -the' past three years. He understood that: the organiser went through New Zeadand issuing the free exercise books/ bearing the advertisements of local business people. According to the organiser, the Main School would be receiving another supply ot free books shortly. It was decided that the cartage account be paid. On the motion of Messrs Tennent and Williams, it was decided to thank the Education Board for the excellent job they had made of the repair work at the school. The Headmaster, Mr J. Graham, reported as follows:—The first term commenced on Tuesday, February 6, fifty new pupils being enrolled. The roll numbers are: —Main: 276 boys; 212 girls, total 518; Blaketown: 46 boys, 36 girls, total 82. Combined: 322 boys, 278 girls; grand total, 600. The relieving teachers at present on the staff are 'Messrs Hart and McCarthy. In addition, Kliss West and Miss McDonagh have been appointed, and they will arrive eaifly next week.
