Apropos of the London cablegram to-day concerning Mr Noble’s defence of barracking, this arises out of a speech that was delivered by Mr M. A. Noble in Sydney on November 27 last, 1c young cricketers, in which he said: ‘We hear far too much about barracking in cricket. My idea is that the barracking is a real ass-it to the game. Generally it is due to the sheer enthusiasm of the barrackers, who, as a rule, are impartial and impersonal.” BODY-LINE. LONDON. January 5. Several writers wax satirical over a. cablegram reporting that an Australian bowler has been no-balled for bodylining. The “Morning Post” says: “It almost, bursts the heart to think that the rule directed against one great bowler from abroad should be broken by an unconsidered bowler at home. We are glad to find that there exist in Australia umpires whom cricket has, for better or worse, drawn from the ranks of thought-readers and psychologists.” SYDNEY, January 5. Apropos the London message relating to an Australian bowler being no-balled for body-lining, etc., inquiries in Sydney failed to disclose any such incident in recent Sheffield Shield matches.
GEELONG SCHOOLBOYS. CHRISTCHURCH, January 5. On three successive days the team of. touring Geelong Grammar Schoolboys have played cricket in Christchurch, and on none of the three days have they been able to play full time. To-day their match with a combined team of Christ’s College and Boys’ High School was stopped by the rain soon after lunch. Scores were:— Geelong 172 (E. 0. B. Grant 66 not out), and 75 for eight wickets; combined team IS6 (R. J. Menzies 45). The visitors go north to Blenheim at the week-end. RAIN AT AUCKLAND AUCKLAND. January 6. The prospect of a full day’s play in the Blanket Shield match between Auckland and Canterbury appeared at 11.30 very poor. Canterbury won the toss. Kerr and Bellamy went in to bat on an easy wicket, which had been covered because of a light shower or two earlier. Only five had been scored when a heavy shower caused an adjournment. The rain now appears to have set in.
