DESERT CODE BROKEN
MAN CUTS TELEGRAPH LINE. Having offended against the unwritten code of Australia’s waterless interior, which says that the overland telegraph line must not be cut, except by those who are in danger of death by starvation or thirst, or who have lost their way, or are stranded miles from aid, David Nightingale was sentenced at Darwin lately to two months’ imprisonment. The police evidence showed that Nightingale cut the line a mile from Powell Creek when walking overland to Darwin from Adelaide. Nightingale pleaded that he was lost and wounded, but the police called evidence to show that he was well supplied with water and provisions.
