o SCULLING. [per press association?.] NEW PLYMOUTH, January 4. Darcy Hadfield, of New Plymouth, the Dominion professional sculling champion, has accepted W. Webb’s challenge. The race will be rowed over three and a-quarter miles at Wanganui. Hadfield is aged forty-six, and Webb fifty-three; CROQUET. ASHBURTON, January 4. The South Island croquet championship tournament was opened this morning by the Mayor, Mr Woods. The . weather was overcast and the greens were holding, but improved later. There were 167 entries from contestants from all parts of the South Island and many from the north, including A. G. F. Ross, who is defending the open title against twelve opponents. Mrs W. N. Corbett is holder of the women’s title, and Ross and. Mrs J. T. Wilson hold the doubles title. Mrs W. F. Caldow, Wellington, and Mrs C. A. Watkins, Hastings, are also competing. EMPIRE GAMES. LONDON, January 4. According to Mr. Evan Hunter (Secretary of the Empire Games), Canada, with 125 competitors, will be the J strongest represented, South Africa will have 30, Australia IG, New Zealand 10, and India 5. Britain will he fully represented.
