POLICE RAID SPEAK-EASIES. [by cabie— press assn.—copyright.] (Received January 5, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 4. Following the order of Mayor La Guardia to clean up the city,, the police staged one of the biggest “round-ups” in recent years last night, and to-day, when they invaded “speak-easies” and, arrested 143, of whom eighteen are known to be habitual criminals or. long fugitives wanted for specific crimes. The precincts of the station houses were crowded. Those facing serious charges were brought to the central headquarters for questioning by new officials. Detectives and patrolmen denied that they had been given orders to make' the arrests, but felt that under the new administration they could arrest anyone violating the law, without fear of political reprisal.
