DUNEDIN, January 4.
At the Chess Congress, the final round was finished to-day, great public interest being taken in the game between Dunlop and Severne, which ended in a draw. The prize winners are Dunlop and Gyles, who tied for first place. Severne was third and Kelling fourth. An extra game is to be played tomorrow between Dunlop and Gyles for the championship of the Dominion. Round 12. Scott v. Didsbury: Scott had move, and Didsbury adopted the French defence. The whole game was very even, both players taking no risks. Each side had a rook and six pawns, and a draw was agreed to on the 31st move. Gyles v. Smith (King’s Franchetto Defence): This was a very short game run on book lines, but Gyles obtained an advantage and held it. Smith resigned at the 24th move. Hicks v. Le Petit (Ray Lopez): The opening was even opening, and on the 23rd move Hicks gained a pawn. Le Petit gave up a knight for two passed pawns. Hicks then checked with bishop, and won an exchange. Later Hicks set a trap which Le Petit was unable to avoid, and he resigned on the 34th move. Severne v. Dunlop: Dunlop adopted the French defence. After exchanges Dunlop opened the knight’s file against Severne’s king; and, castling on the queen’s side, he set up a strong attack with queen and doubled rook, and won pawn. A stubborn struggle ensued, with careful play on both sides. Dunlop, however, failed to capture a pawn, and Severne forced a. draw at the 54tn move. Gyles v. Smith: The latter adopted the King’s Francetto defeneq. Gyles was in temporary difficulties for some time, but emerged stronger, and his superior development won the game on the twenty-fourth move.
