HOKITIKA, January 5.
The store of Mr L. Gooch, corner of Stafford anti Sale Streets, is reported to have been broken into early yesterday morning, and a quantity of tobacco and other goods was stolen, the value being estimated at £3O. The funeral of the late Mrs Haddow took place yesterday morning. The Rev. G. A. Naylor conducted the funeral rites of the Presbyterian Church. The, funeral of the late Mr T. W. Bruce, which was private, took place this morning, Rev. G. A. Naylor being the officiating minister.
At the bi-monthly meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board on Wednesday evening, reference was made to the passing of Mr Bruce, who for some years represented the Borough of Ross on the Board. A vote of sympathy with the widow and family was passed. In senior cricket during the weekend, Kanieri will meet the Hokitika seniprs. A team for the latter will be selected from the following:—Baird, Johnston, Morgan, Adamson, Thomas, Stapleton (2), Collett, Richards, Connolly, Walker, Pierson, Childs, Sutton.
At the Harbour Board meeting on Wednesday, an application by Mr P. J. Higgins for a sawmill site towards the mouth of the river near the Borough pipe shed was considered and granted, the rental being fixed at £lO per annum. At the same meeting a proposal was put forward by a Mr Tate for the improvement of the berthage by straightening the river channel. The method proposed is a drag line. The matter has been held over pending the receipt of a report that is in preparation by the Public Works Department, Mr Schnackenburg having made a comprehensive survey of the whole position. 1 The marriage of Mr Robert W. Palmer, of Hokitika, with Miss Grace Margaret Watson, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Watson, of Upper Aramoho (Wanganui), was solemnised at Christ Church, Wanganui, on New Year’s Day. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attired in cream georgette and an over dress of radium lace, a. hand-embroidered veil, cream silk mittens and stockings and shoes to tone. She was attended by four bridesmaids —Miss Kathleen Watson, sister of the bride, pale green organdi; Isma Gillies, rose organdi; and Joyce and Beatrice Watson (sisters of the bride), in blue and primrose organdi respectively. They all wore mob caps and carried posies of tone with their frocks. Mr Morris Watson (brother of the bride) was best man, while Mr Jack Richards (nephew of the bridegroom) attended as groomsman. The reception was held at the Rendezvous. The bride’s travelling dress was brown marocain, with hat and shoes to tone. Mr and Mrs Palmer will reside in Hokitika.
The marriage of Violet Maria Haines, daughter of Mr and Mrs Haines, of Weld Street, with Edward Williams, also of Hokitika, was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church by. the Rev. Father Finnerty yesterday morning. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a brown crepe satin frock, with hat, stockings and shoes to tone. She-was attended by Miss Alva Williams as bridesmaid. Both carried pretty bouquets. Mr R. Williams was best man. Later the newly-married couple left for Christchurch and Wellington.
