MURDERED MAGISTRATE
; STUDENTS’ CONSPIRACY I 4 [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] CALCUTTA, January 3. The trial has opened of thirteen youths, mostly students, in connection with the murder in September of Mr. B. E. Burge, the District Magistrate of Midnapore on a football field. Counsel, for the prosecution said that the terrorist plot was formed in 1928. The majority of the accused joined it tn 1932. They studied seditious literature, and they advocated the securing of independence by violence. A rumour had been spread that Mr. Burge had oppressed peasants in order to secure taxes. Thereupon the accused decided to murder him. They indulged in target practice with revolvers in a remote jungle. Mr. Burge was murdered while he was playing football on September 2. Two members of the gan£, Ananta and Mrigenda, were killed by Burge’s guards. The remaining accused, armed with revolvers, remained in the vicinity of the crime. One, Sailesh Gosh, was later arrested. He turned King’s evidence, and revealed the names of the accused and the details of the plot.
