NOTES ON THE RACING

[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, December 16. The Trial Plate provided an interesting finish. The big field appeared to get away on good terms, and when the course proper was reached, Hignbrow was slightly in front of Delice with Silver Jest, Norman Conquest, Imperial Spear, Silk Arrow and Grampian following in close order, bilvei Jest gradually wore down the two leaders, and was clear of them fifty yards from the post, but Imperial Spear finishing--with a late run had him fully extended to win by half a length. Grampian also put in some solid work over the concluding stages and got up to beat Highbrow for third money, a neck behind Imperial Spear. Delice, Marquillo, Bell Hill, Silk Arrow and Proscenium were next, with Madge’s Coin, who was slow away, and Maroha disputing last place. Silver Jest won well and is the makings of a useful performer. He has not raced a great deal, one ot his few previous efforts being a close second placing to Rebel Star at Motukarara in October. Imperial Spear made an auspicious reappealance, and would have caused more trouble to the winner with a little more ground to cover. Grampian ran a most promising race, and may yet make good. Highbrow made a creditable showing in the face of his interrupted preparation. He showed signs of lameness on returning. Delice once again had every chance, but could not finish on. Silk Arrow also found the journey too far. Vintage was an outstanding favoui-, it o for the Bangor Highweight Handicap, and recorded a very easy win. When the field settled down, Fleeting Glance, Eupator, and Double Shot were most prominent, but rounding the top, Sam Smith took charge and led from Fleeting Glance, ■ Eupator, Double Shot, Vintage, and High Rank. Sam Smith was first into the straight from Vintage, Fleeting Glance, Eupator, High Rank, and Double Shot, and Nightguard,• but inside the distance, Vintage forged to the front, and ran home with four lengths to spare from Sam Smith, who as easily beat High Rank Nightguard was close up next 4n front of Fleeting Glance, Night

’ Flyer, Bright Red, Eupator and Double Shot. Vintage outclassed the field, and will continue his winning vein during his trip to the southern holiday meetings. Sam Smith was always one of the front division and was unlucky to strike such a formidable opponent as Vintage. Sam Smith has been a consistent place getter, but has yet to win a race. High Rank ran a promising race and like her relations will improve with age. Nightguard was well placed over the last half mile, but. did not complete his task as solidly as expected. Fleeting Glance was always prominent and her effort promises well for her attempts in hurdle races during the holidays. Night Flyer’ was a good way back in last place at the half mile and executed some telling ,work in the run home. Bright Red was in a handy position at the straight entrance but was never ' dan-1 gerous in the run home. The Glendore Trot provided a very ' exciting finish, for after Dandy 1.0- ’ canda and Emmeline’s Last had made most of the running Royal Crescent came with a good burst of speed in the straight to win by a nose. The winner, a four-year-old by Nelson Derby—Tiny Moon, made up a lot of ground over the last quarter mil&, and j registered a. very smart performance. Emmeline’s Last was the unlucky runner of the race.

The Hororata Cup. provided a most interesting tussle over the last furlong. There was not much pace on early, the first half mile taking 53 3-5, and in consequence the field was fairly well bunched from the outset. Sweet Agnes, under a strong hold, as-, sumed command after a flirlong had been covered, and led round the top'/ and to the home turn from Argentic., Some Shamble, True Shaft, jwiueryni..; Ramo, and Locksley, all in close order. Sweet Agnes and Argentic V’ere practically on terms entering the straight, and although Sweet Agnes held the advantage at the distance, and appeared to be going easy, Argentic proved her superior c>ver th# last few strides,, and got up to beat her by a neck. Minerva! \yas a length away, a. neck in front of; True Shaft, who was followed by Some Shamble,« Locksley and Ramo. , Argentic and Swg'et Agnes fought their Ashburton finish over again, and the former .Once more showed the better stamina/ Sweet Agnes was unfortunate in Xaving to make the pace, and at th/e/ same time being held in restraints, and this had its effect over the fiij-al few strides. Minerval ran a fair-race. while True Shaft was<»alf??ays handy, but the distance was beyond him. Some Shamble was a big disappointment. Tie was in a promising position turning for home, but made a weak showing over the business stages. Locksley and Ramo were in the ; throughout. Final Shot scored an impressive win in the SaSdown Handicap. She and Haere Tonu '.. ere together in close attendance sn the' pacemaker, Miss NightraL?. mitering upon the course proper, and they drew out at the distance to engage in a sustained finish, Final Shot staying on the better to beat him by over a length. Wild Sky came from a rear position to secure third money from Cinders, who was followed by Miss Nightraid, Doiran, Glandovey, and Arrowrose. This was Final Shot’s second successive win for her owner, whose colours have only been borne on the two occasions. Haere Tonu put up a solid fight, and should pay his way during his northern trip. Wild Sky, as at Ashburton, finished very strongly, while Cinders and Miss Nightraid showed a turn of speed for the greater part of the journey. Doiran was m a handy position at the distance, but gave a disappointing display over the business stages. The Racecourse Hill Handicapproved to be an easy proposition foi the well fancied Manetho, who was always in a good position, and buried the leaders in the run home. The race had not long been in progress before Cranford shot to the front from Silver Ring, Night Recital, Manetho, Silver Streak, Metal Bird and Hurlmgham. Cranford had a lead of three lengths at the home turn and was this distance at the straight entiance in front of Manetho, Silver Ring, Metal Bird, Silver Streak, and Hurlingham. ■ Cranford was in trouble inside the distance and Manetho gradually forged to the front, while Silver Streak and Hurlingham commenced to improve their positions. Neither, however, had a, chance with Manetho, who won easing up. Silver Streak beating Hurlingham in the last few strides for second money. Cranford was a neck away fourth, in front of Silver Ring, Shatter,, Metal Bird, Wise Choice, and Arrowmaid, with Night Recital last. . Manetho made amends for all his recent ill luck and committed no misr takes on this occasion. He finished with something in hand, and gave indications that a middle distance race is not beyond him. Silver Streak did well under his big weight, and his effort was encouraging in view of his trip to Ellerslie. Hurlingham also ran a creditable race in similar circumstances. Cranford showed lus usual speed, but ran himself out. Silver Ring gave a pleasing display, and did not retire from one of the leading positions 'until well inside the distance. Shatter received a check nearing the far turn, and was sent back to last place. He put in some telling work over the last half and was galloping very fast over the final stages. Metal Bird did not perform up to expectations. The Snowdon Trot Handicap produced a. great race between five horses and in a stirring finish Real Burton held his own to win by a nose from Carnera, with „ the narrowest ot margins separating four other. hoises. It was a good display of stamina and gameness on the part of the first foui horses and both Attorney and Llewellyn’s Pride should win races during the holidays. Cleaner won the Brackendale Handicap practically from barrier rise, lie was followed early by Silver Sight and led into the straight, from Silver Sight, Davolo, and Heather Glow. Davolo made a game attempt to overhaul him but made little impression and Cleaner had a comfortable victory. Water Polo finished on well into third place with Heather Glow, next.

Exhibition Gallop: Immediately after the decision of the second race at Riccarton on Saturday. an exhibition gallop was staged by Rocket (A. Eastwood) and Nightly (A. Russell), who hopped off from th nine furlong post. The first furlong occupied 14'2-5, two furlongs 27, three 40, four 53, five 1.6, and the full dis-

tance 1.55 3-5, the last half thus taking 49 3-5. Rocket was in front for the first half of the journey, but Nightly had a slight advantage entering the straight, and although he was palpably going better than Rocket throughout the run home, he allowed his companion to get up to make a dead heat. Both horses pleased by their displays, and were given a round of applause as tb< y returned to the birdcage. GOLD TRAIL »T NAPIER PARK. STITCH BEATS SPRINTERS. NAPIER, December 10.
