Dec. 26, 27, 29— Manawatu. pec. 26, 28, Jan. 1,2, Auckland. Jan. I—Waikouati. Jan. I—Wyndham. Jan. 1, 2—Greymouth. Jan. 1, 2—Hawke’s Bay. Jan. 1, 2—Stratford. Jan. 1, 2—Marton. Jan. 1, 2—Wairarapa. Jan. 2—Oamaru. Jan. 2, 3—Southland. Jan. 6, B—Reefton.8 —Reefton. Will Win Again: Burnish, winner of the Nursery Handicap at Woodville on Saturday, will win in better company. She was one of the leaders all the way, and is a likely youngster. Sure to Improve: The winner of the maiden race at Woodville on Saturday, Debut, is a likely sort of Diacquenod from Avolo. He won all the way, and is sure to improve.

Is Solid: April Fool won the hack six at Woodville in decisive manner, and is solid:There is another race waiting around the corner.

G.N. Derby Candidate: Spiral is a fairly good three-year-old, who was nicely weighted at Woodville, and should go on to better things. He is to contest the Great Northern Derby.

Failed Again: Forestry failed to realise expectations at Woodville. He has beep, backed and beaten several times new, and there is no doubt q-bout him being as good as he is. credited with being,. His third yesterday was his best for some time.

Sanguine King: Was beaten by a good horse in Emotion on Saturday, and again yesterday. Sanguine King is displaying consistency that cannot continue much longer without being rewarded with a win. Made the Running:

Gold Trail made all the running in the principal race at Woodville on Saturday, and did well to get second. He looked a prospect for yesterday, Kut failed. Palantua: It is understood that Palantua will not race again until the Dunedin Cup meeting. Rocket In Favour: The absence of Polydora and Palantua from the Auckland Cup will bring Rocket into favour. A Free Worker: Kiltowyn is working as freely as ever in his track work at Ellerslie, and, will be in the pink of condition for the coming meeting at Ellerslie. Not Thrown In: Unoco is doing nicely in his work, but will need to be at his best to prevail in the Pirongia Hurdles at Waipa with> 10.6, which is 51b. more than Mia Stella, a recent winner, is required to carry. Likely Hack: Landlubber is engaged in a couple of hack events at the Auckland meeting, and as he does not require much racing to enable him to reproduce his best form should be at his best for that meeting. Middle Distance Suits Best: King’s Archer* continues to go on the right way. He is in the Auckland Cup at the minimum weight, but so far is not being given a preparation for a solidly-run two miles event. Maybe he will be better suited up to a mile and a quarter, a distance he has previously been successful over at Ellerslie. To Race at Ellerslie: F. Davis, of Woodville, stated the other day that Red Manfred and Pin Money have been acquitting tfiemselves satisfactorily in then’ training at Woodville. They will both make the trip to Ellerslie, to compete at the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club.

In Regular Work Again: The Surveyor gelding Versant is getting through light tasks at Ellerslie and shows little signs of the soreness that prevented him from racing at Takapuna. He has been entered for minor events at the Auckland Summer meeting, and all going well, may be given a race at that fixture.

, Benefited With Race: My Money looks none the worse for his race at Takapuna and will be an improved horse by the time the Auckland meeting arrives. On several occasions during the Spring this three-year-old has shown promising speed in his work and little notice need be taken of his failure at North Shor§.

For Auckland: The Trentham pair Red Sun and Epigram are definitely to go to Ellerslie for the holiday racing, and they will leave Wellington for the North next Wednesday. Each will probably have his first race on the trip at the Waipa meeting, where Red Sun will contest the Te Awamutu Cup, and Epigram the seven-furlong Haic’k Cup.

Her Turn is Near: Lagoon’s running at Takapuna went to show that, her preparation has been too short for her to become enrolled _ winner. The Musketoon filly, however is such a genuine performer, with n fair dash of speed, that at one of the country fixtures she is likely to prevail in the near future. She is none the worse for her recent racing.

Tiger Gain: . His next appearance will in all probability be made at the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club. His racing at Feilding has had no detrimental effect upon him, as he returned to Walpukurau without any evidence the trip to Feilding had been undertaken.

'Out of Commission: The ailment that prevented Takakua racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting is still in evidence, and the son nf Royal Divorce is at present out of commission. He is unlikely to race again until the autumn meetings arrive Takakua’s past performances

‘indicate that he is above the average, and it is to be hoped that the spell will prove beneficial to him.

Disappointed: In his running at the Takapuna meeting King Mestor disappointed backers. Whereas he has lately been finishing on resolutely in bis track trials, he faded out of the contest in the Pupuke Plato, after being well placed right up to the straight. Probably the King Lu gelding is. not yet sufficiently seasoned to be at his best, and there ia yet time during the present term for him to make amends for past failures.

King Brierly: It is intended that King Brierly is to contest the Great Northern Foal Stakes at the Auckland meeting. He is getting through a really good preparation very satisfactarily and can be depended upon to run an honest race. The King Lu gelding is furnishing out and is.now a fine type of two-year-old. Should Gain a Place:

Don’t Lap has freshened up since running at Whangarei and at Te Awamutu this week should run prominently in the Ohaupo Hack Handicap with 8.7 ,as he will not be meeting a highgrade field. Mustang, in the same stable, should now be sufficiently forward to at least gain place money.

-Looking Bright: Hawera’s Giieat Northern Derby can■didate Golden Hair has so far been 'relegated to steady pace exercise. ‘When this filly won the V.R.C. Oaks Iso; decisively she did it on a light preparation, for a mile and a-half race, and Cox can be relied on having her in good shape for the Great Northern .Derby. She is looking bright and 'well, and her work from now on 'should prove interesting.

May Race at Awapuni: Baroscope has been, nominated for the. Manawatu Cup, to be run at AwapUiPi; on Boxing Day. He is also in sthe. President's Handicap, to be decided? on the second day of the Mana-\yat-U’ meeting, and? will in all probability fulfil his engagements at that fixture. If this programme is carried out Baroscope w.ili! return in time to compete on the last two days of the Auckland meeting. In his present condition, Baroscope should be capable ot reaching the winning list again before the holiday meetings are over. NOTES FROM RICCARTON. SOME INTERESTING GALLOPS. [SPECIAL TO “siAß.”] CHRISTCHURCH, December 12. Conditions were favourable for training operations at Riccarton today. The outside of the trial grass was made available, and as the result of light rain over the week-end, it provided a yielding surface. The plough, which was on the heavy side, was not much in demand.

The Reverse Way: . On the plough, Cricket Bat strode over six furlongs in his usual free style, in 1.17, the last three in 38 4-5, and his stable mates Copyist and Horn’s Reef ran half a mile comfortably in 53. Rocket and Nightly were once again companions over a mile, which occupied 1.45 2-5, the last half-mile taking -531-5. Neither was called upon to shew his best, and they kept abreast practically throughout. Their exhibition gallop on Saturday will form an interesting feature of the afternoon s programme. Guarantee was the only horse to work the reverse way on the grass, and he was restricted to a short sprint round the top. Going the right way on the plough, Argentic and Monastic recorded 1312-5 for seven furlongs, the last three taking 50 4-5. The former moved a little short later, but the trouble was expected to work off.

Trip Off: Grand Review and Double Shot ran a mile in 1.52, finishing together. Their stable mate, Great Star, was an absentee owing to his poisoned leg giving renewed trouble, and the proposed trip to Ellerslie with him and Grand Review has been cancelled. High Rank and Pleasant Memory were not ridden out to record 1.21. The former will soon make good.

On the Grass: Cleaner covered six furlongs m 1.17 4-5, the last half in 53. Imperial Spear and Control sprinted half a mile along the back in 49 2-5, the first three in 36.. Sam Smith narrowly beat Elude over six furlongs in 1.18, the last halt in 52 2-5. High Tor showed good form by easily accounting for Doiran in a haltmile task executed in 49 2-5. The latter is a lazy track.worker, and always does better in a race. Bright Red and Sibella covered six furlongs in 1.17 2-5, the former finishing slightly in front. Royal Sceptre ran over the same ground' in 1.19, and Silver Brier occupied 1.20 for a like task. . Arrow Rose reeled off half a, mile in 50 1-5, and similar work was executed by Invoice and Silver Jest in 49 4-5, Rational 11. in 50 2-5, Shatter in 52, and Chief Light and Strong Light in 49 i- 5 - Night Flier was well clear of Ramo, with another break to Ruling Pen at the end of a mile run in 1.44, the second half in 51. Night Flyer impressed by his finishing effort, but Ramo was disappointing. Tout le Monde and Some Shamble were sent from the seven furlongs post, and Nigger head joined them near the five furlongs, the last-named finishing a length in front of the other pair, ■ who finished abreast, 1.29 4-5, the last half in 52.

A Good Gallop: Minerval and' I-lurlingham were responsible for an impressive effort over a mile, covered in 1.41. They finished together, but Hurlingham appeared to be going the better. Cinders galloped live furlongs in 1.4 3-5, and Rebel Star and Cheap Money ran the same distance in 1.3, the last half in 50. Southdown and True Shaft pleased by covering seven furlongs in 1.29 4-5, the last half in 51 3-5. Variant finished half a length in front of Haere Tonu after leaving four fu,rlongs behind in 49 2-5, and Nightguard similarly beat Water Polo in the same time. Eupator strode over seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5, the last half in 52 1-5. Croupier strode over six furlongs

in 1.16 2-5, coming home the last half in 50. Marcus Cicero accompanied him over the final three furlongs. Sweet Agnes galloped a mile well in 1.42 3-5, the last half in 50 2-5. i Cranford was finishing on after covering six furlongs in 1.15 3-5, the last half taking 50 4-5. Gaysome beat Moonbeam over five furlongs run in 1.3 4-5, the last three in 38 1-5.

Fast Travelling: Vintage, picked up by Final Shot at five furlongs, covered seven fu,rlongs in the good time of 1.28 2-5, the last five in 1.3, and last half in 50.

At the Right End: Sky Rover got up to beat Silver Foil and Marquillo at tye end of half a mile from a standing start in 512-5. Metal Bird and Wise Choice reeled off five furlongs in 1.2 4-5. Delice ran from the mile post to the five furlong peg at three-quarter pace, and was then joined by Davolo, who beat her home decisively, the last half taking 53 3-5.

Impressive: Manetho, assisted by Bright Shade over the last hal£-mile, ran nine furlongs in 1.55, the last mile in 1.42, and last half 50 1-5. Manetho finished on well, and was on terms with his companion at the post. He has been accepted for in two events at the Hororata fixture, but is likely to start in his seven furlong engagement, and will he ridden by G. Humphries. Arrowmaid was slightly in front of Madge’s Coin at the end of half a mile run in 49 3-5. Bowlands executed a like task in 51. Premature Report: Silver Ring was given strong work on the sand'. He is to be ridden on Saturday by D. O’Connor. His reported projected transfei' to a West Coast stable is not thought likely to eventuate, but his connexions have expressed a desire to race him at the Greymouth meeting. If this trip is not undertaken, he will probably be taken by R. W. King to Waikouaiti and Oamaru. Too Much Pace On: Don Jose (G. Barr) and Fleeting Glance (H. Turner) were sent out to jump a round of the hurdles, but both crashed at the first fence., after approaching it with a very fast short run. Turner was thrown clear and escaped injury, but Barr received a kick from Fleeting Glance, and sustained body bruises. He received medical attention, and was conveyed to his home. Fleeting Glance was remounted by Turner, and jumped four hurdles in a careful manner. Riders for Saturday: Some riding engagements made for Saturday’s races at Riccarton are as follow: —D. O’Connor, Vintage, Doiran, Silver Ring; G. Humphries, Manetho, Some Shamble, Grand Review, Silver Jest; A. Messervy, Wise Choice, Variant, Water Polo; L. J. Ellis, Silk Arrow, Rebel Star, Heather Glow, Metal Bird, Ramo; M. Kirwan, Delice, True Shaft, Haere Tonu; «H. Donovan, Elude; A. E. Ellis, High Rank, Hurlingham, Highbrow, Davolo; C. Eastwood, Sweet Agnes, Sky Rover, Arrowrose, Arrowmaid.
