The existence of a ‘‘pond” underneath the foundations of St. Paul’s Cathedral, is disclosed in a report by Sir Alexander Gibb and Mr. Ralph Freeman ,who say it is essential that the flow of sub-soil water in future should not bo appreciably varied, and recommend that a defined area in the neighbourhood of the Cathedral be controlled, with a view to avoiding excavations.

The total subsidence of the central part of the Cathedral in 37 years is stated to be 2.39 inches. The investigators urge that three ex-

perts be appointed under Act of Parliament, to control the area, which will require the most rigorous attention.

When asked in the Commons whether he would consider establishing an independent trade body under the chairmanship of a British Minister, to underlie the development of Imperial trade and unity, the Prime Minister replied that the Government was always ready, in consultation with the other members of the British Commonwealth, to consider means for the development of inter-Imperial trade relations.
