CRICKET

PLAY IN TRIAL MATCHES.

VISITING TEAMS V. GREYMOUTH

It was unfortunate that rain should mar the play in the two cricket matches, at the Recreation Ground yesterday. Two visiting teams, Reefton, and Hokitika, met teams selected from the Grey district. A late start at both matches, in the morning,, hampered the prospects of the games being decided outright. There was also a late start in the afternoon, and the loss of these valuable minutes was doubly felt when rain set in soon, after the commencement of afternoon play, and a steady light fall caused I tho drawing of stumps at 5.45 p.m. The cricket witnessed was bright generally, the displays of J. Timlin and Nightingale (Grey) and Blom, Malley, and Campbell (Reefton),_ Griffiths and Ogilvie (Hokitika) with the bat being pleasing to witness. In the field some good work was executed, but none so good as that of Heasley. His fielding of the ball and accurate returns to the wicket were splendid. There was sufficient material before the selectors, from which a solid team could be chosen to represent the West Coast this season. Neither match was played to a finish, but Reefton definitely defeated Greymouth B on the first innings, and looked like making a heavy score in their second strike, when stumps were drawn. In the other match, Hokitika and Greymouth A, a partnership between Nightingale and J.' Timlin produced 74 runs, and effectively broke down the bowling, to enable the side to make 187 before the fall of the last wicket. The bowlers were handicapped in that the ball was wet and difficult to control, while foothold was not always secure. There were several promising players, seen, and more than one of the visitors showed ability that cannot but attract the attention of the selectors, to their claims for representative honours.

GREYMOUTH A AND HOKITIKA.

A bright display of batting was given by Nightingale and Timlin for Greymouth A, in the match against Hokitika, played on No. 2 wicket, at the Recreation Ground. At the luncheon adjournment, Greymouth had lost three wickets for 49 runs. On resuming, Timlin and Nightingale treated the bowling with scant respect, and boundary hits were numerous, while the running between the wickets was an improvement on what is usually witnessed in club cricket. Steady rain was falling throughout the afternoon, and when Greymouth had reached 180 for the loss of seven wickets, the batsmen had a “go” at the bowling, and the side was dismissed for 187 runs. Timlin gave his brightest display x this season, and once he got on top of the bowling, he treated all alike, with rare success. His partnership with Nightingale provided the most breezy cricket seen in Greymouth for several seasons. The bowling was well collared, and in. taking three wickets for 57 runs, C. Morgan did exceedingly well. Hokitika replied with 95 runs for the loss of six wickets, when rain stopped play. Griffiths contributed 25, and most of the other batsmen shaped confidently. Greatbach and Dalkie bowled well. Scores- — Greymouth A.—O. Morris, c Griffiths b Morgan 4; N. Bayley, b Baird 19; T: Clarke, c O’Connor, b Wilson 15; W. Timlin, c O’Connor, b Morgan 61; H. S. REEFTON DEFEAT GREYMOUTH B

It was a clear-cut victory that Reefton scored over Greymouth B, on No. 1. wicket, at the Recreation Ground. 1 Batting first. Reefton made a disastrous start, three wickets falling for only four runs, and five being down for 13. Blom and F. Malley then made a stand to carry the total to 63 before Blom mishit one to Cornish. After the luncheon adjournment when Blom and Malley returned to the wickets, the brightest cricket -seen in Greymouth this season was given by them, and each succeeding batsman continued with interesting play. In making -14 Malley gave an impressive exhibition, and if such was his usual form, then he has serious claims for inclusion in the West Coast eleven. Campbell is another young player who impressed, and in making 1!) he exhibited a variety of shots, which he played well. He was dismissed unluckily. Cornish, Mathews and Rapley secured the wickets, each bowling- steadily, with Mathews the most impressive. Greymouth commenced badly when McLaughlin was sent back, after making onlj’- one. Heasley and Guy then played patiently to carry the score to 30 before Guy was dismissed. In making 25, Heasley played sound cricket, and it was a mishit that brought about his undoing. Mathews and Rapley slowed up play, which became dull and uninteresting. Apart from Greening, who contributed 10, the other batsmen failed and the side compiled only 98 Green and Scott handled the greasy ball with good effect, and were together responsible for seven wickets. Reefton had scored 60 for the loss of two wickets when the continued rain caused stumps to be drawn. Scores were: —

LADIES’ MATCH. Rain did not cause a postponement of the ladies’ match, between Reefton and Cobden yesterday, before each side had completed an. innings. The match was played at Cobden Domain, and Reefton won by two wickets and 16 runs. The knowledge of the game exhibited by both teams was surprisingly good, and the batting strength also caused favourable comment from the spectators. Both sides were keen to win, and it was a better match to witness than most of the senior men’s matches usually produce. Cobden batted first and compiled 142, N. Bris*lane (29), M. Knapp (24), and M. Prico (23) doing best. In bowling for Reefton, Mrs. Lawry took five wickets for 53. and Miss Mitchell 4 for 46. Reefton had hit up 158 for the loss of eight wickets when a. declaration was made.
