[PEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] FALSE PRETENCES. DUNEDIN, December 8. Albert Robert Wilcoxson, on charges of false pretences and theft, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment. Accused had a long list, having appeared at Christchurch. Hastings, and twice at Dunedin. FINED FOR ASSAULT. WELLINGTON, December 8. Reserved decision was given by Mr Page, S.M., in the assault case against John Hugh Marshall, in connection with an affray between Marshall and Robert Westley Bothamley, solicitor, Chairman of the Makara County Council. Mr Page said he had no doubt an assault had been committed, and he imposed a fine of £5, which he increased, at counsel’s request, to enable an appeal, security for which was fixed at the amount of the fine £5/1/-, plus ten guineas. ROAD DISPUTE. CHRISTCHURCH, December 7. A well-known racehorse owner, and the Inspector of the Lands Department came before Mr Mosley, S.M., on charges arising out of an incident on Yaldhurst Road recently. John Robert McKenzie, an importer, was charged with assaulting George Ross Stevenson, Farms Inspector to the Lands Department. Stevenson was charged with driving in a negligent manner and with failing to stop a motor-car at the request of the owner of the horse. A dispute had arisen over the fact that Stevenson’s car nearly collided with a valuable horse, owned by McKenzie. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate dismissed all of the charges, ordering the defendants to shake hands. This they did. BENZINE ABLAZE. WANGANUI, December 7.

There was some excitement at Marton Dental Clinic this afternoon, when a. bucket containing benzine, in which Nurse Cochran was attending to soxcleaning, ignited from a gas jet burning a few feet away. The nurse rushed for assistance, and a man who was passing tried to smother the flames with a mat, which also became ignited. Another passer-by, N. Meredith, took off his coat, which he pushed into the bucket. Both of his arms were immersed in flaming benzine, and he sustained severe burns, extending to the elbow. After being attended to by a doctor, the injured man was conveyed by ambulance to Wanganui hospital. The fire was extinguished without much damage being done.
