SIGNALMAN TAKES BETS
CH.CH HOUSE RAIDED
[PEG PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
CHRISTCHURCH, November 14
John Henry Knowles, railway signalman, was fined £5O with costs for keeping a common gaming house, before Magistrate Mosley. Police evidence described a raid on accused’s house in the suburbs, while last week’s races were in progress. Several bets were given over the telephone, while the detectives were in the house. Counsel said that accused bore an excellent character but would, of course, lose his position. Most of the (betting was with railway servants, and the amounts were small. The police said that accused was fortunate in not being caught before. It was difficult to understand how he could pay for a motor car, telephone and a wireless transmitting set, on the wage he received as a signalman.
