Before the formal business of the Borough Council was started ou Friday evening ,a deputation from the Southern Rugby Sub-Union, consisting of the President (Mr J. Stafford), the secretary (Mr. E. W. Heenan), and Messrs A. 11. Lawn, D. Dowell and A. Cutbush, waited on the Council concerning improvements to Cass Square. Mr. Stafford pointed out the need for improvement on the playing grounds. He sad that an improved field would give better football, and better football would bring bigger matches and more people. Mr. Heenan said that the Sub-Union had, a few years ago, spent £lO in improvements to the ground, and £22 towards the line fence. The ground needed draining. He instanced the Westport ground, where the field was drained by cutting a ditch and puttingin coke. It was one of the best playing fields in New Zealand to-day. it was suggested that a strip of asphalt be laid along the fence to allow spectators to watch the games without getting wet footed. Cr. King said he thought the sports bodies were moving to the racecourse. Mr. Keenan said Mr. F. McGregor had approached the Union on behalf of the Racing Club, but the proposition was too big for them, and money could not be raised to improve private grounds. Mr. Dowell said the Sub-Union had decieed definitely that it will not leave Cass Square, but the Square needed improving. Mr. A. Cutbush said that some years ago he was a member of a deputation to the Council on the matter of Cass Square, and it was then decided that the Council should get 10 per cent, of the net proceeds of gate takings, which was Io be spent on the playing area, but the Council had not spent £lO on it. Rubbish from the streets was carted in containing stoneS, which were dangerous. He advocated the strip of ashphalt along along the rails. At the suggestion of the Mayor, the Reserves Committee is to meet the Secretary of the Union (Mr. Heenan) on Cass Square, and confer- on the matter of the improvements required.
