DAYLIGHT SAVING
GOVT.’S EXTENSION BILL.
[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]
WELLINGTON, November 8.
It is the intention of the Government to introduce and put through all stages, this session of Parliament, an amendment to the Summer-time Act, providing for a much longer period of daylight saving than is at present the case.
The Government’s proposals are, to begin summer-time about three weeks earlier than at present, and to allow the period to run on till after Easter, bringing summer-time to an end about the fourth Sunday in April.
Recently, Mr. McKeen had a Bill before tho House, providing for an hour’s summer-time, and for the period to be extended by three weeks. The feeling in the House was that there should be no extension from half-an-hour to an hour, but there was general approval, even from representatives of farmers, to the idea of extending the period for another three weeks. This Bill was withdrawn, at the request of the Government, whose present proposals go further, than those of Mr McKeen, who had indicated his willingness to restrict his measure to an additional half hour, for three weeks. Tho Government’s Bill will have the effect of extending Summer-time for between seven and eight weeks, and Easter, no matter whether it comes in March or April, will be included in the period. The measure is now being drafted, and will probably be introduced in the course of the next few days.
