WAIUTA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Mr AV. Eddy was a visitor to AVaiuta for the week-end. Miss E. McLennan, who has been visiting Waiuta, has returned to Ikamatua. Mr 11. Service (Dunedin) arrived m Waiuta last evening. Mr and Mrs Larcombe were visitors to Waiuta on Tuesday. The offical opening of the Waiuta Tennis Club took place on Sunday last, in fine weather. The President, Mr J. A. McEwin, apologised for the absence of Mr E. AV. Spencer, the patron, who found it impossible to be pretsont. The President performed the opening ceremony, and Mr T. R. I-lcgg hit the first ball over the net. The ladies served afternoon tea. and a number of enjoyable games were played.

The opening of the tennis and cricket season took place on the Domain on Sunday last, when the Waiuta Public Tennis Club and the Waiuta Cricket Club opened the season in conjunction with one another. During the afternoon the President of the Tennis Club (Mr AV. Stanbury) declared the courts open for the season and hoped they woi;ld, with the Cricket Club, have a successful season. Mr AV. G. Staples spoke on behalf of the Cricket Club, and' also hoped for a successful season. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and a number of games were played. A cricket match, New Zealand v The Rest, resulted in a win for New Zealand by two runs. The first annual meeting of the Waiuta Ladies’ Cricket Club was held in the hall on Monday evening. There was a good attendance. Mr AV. Tomlinson presided. It was decided to invite Cobden and Reefton to play matches at AVaiuta, the dates to be decided later. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr E. J. Fitzgerald; president, Mr P. O’Donnell; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. J. Morel; vicepresidents, Dr. Logan, Mrs Tomlinson, Mrs Nohra, Messrs Morrison, Collins, F. Thorn, R. Tomlnson, L. Harvey, Bartlett, Dunshea, Pratt, G. Ronchi, and J. Guy; auditor, Mr J. Guy; committee: Airs Lewis, Miss AVhitc, Airs Anderson, Misses L. Thorn, V. Ronchi, E. Ronchi and Messrs Tomlinson and Tighe.
