To-day’s Racing News

Trotting

MEETINGS TO COME.

Nov. 7,9, 10—N.Z. Metropolitan. Nov. 23, 25 —Forbury Park. Dec. 9—New Brighton. Dec. 20—Gore. Dec. 26 —Ashburton. Dec. 26, 27—Wairarapa.

Red Shadow: Was putting in a line 'run at the finish of the Cup Trial on Saturday, and he is not likely to lose any of his supporters as a result of his performance.

Wrackler: Returned to Ashburton after the Wellington meeting, but will be worked at Addington on Thursday, probably with one of W. J. Tomkinson’s cup horses.

General Wrack: Did not get away well in the Borough Handicap at the Wellington meeting, otherwise the winner, Worthy Light, would have had to go a little bit faster.

Norman Fox: Fell before the start of the Petone Handicap at Wellington on Saturday, and although he started' in the race, he was soon pulled up, having injured a hock.

What of Royal Silk? The last three New Zealand Trotting Cv,ps which have been decided have been won by horses who have been successful at their start before the Cup. Wrackler three years ago won the New Zealand Cup Trial, then his division and final of the Cup; Harold Logan won the Weston Handicap at Oamaru a year later, and while he was fourth in his division, he won the final; and last year he won the New Zealand Cup Trial at Wellington immediately before winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Royal Silk gathered' in the Cup Trial on Saturday.

Trotting Cup: Discussions on the Trotting Cup from a handicap point of view will be inevitable during this week, but experience has proved regarding the race from that point of view may be bfised on entirely false premises. For some illogical reason, trainers prepare a horse to go a solid two miles and then get beaten for speed at the end of a false-run race. They drive to the pace set by the leaders, and not to what a horse should acomplish in a sound-run race. Last year Harold Logan won in 4.16 2-5. He trailed the field in what amounted 1 to a slow-run race, and waited there until about half a mile from home. He then stepped a final half-mile in 1.2 3-5, and the last

quarter in 58, smothering the opposition for speed in the run home. Harold Logan was easing up by two lengths. The race was run to suit an exceptionally speedy horse. In 1931 Harold Logan merely qualified by running into fourth place in the second heat won in 4.21. Lindbergh won the first heat in 4.22 2-5. When it came to the final Harold Logan won in 4.18 2-5. They went the first mile in 2.15. This left Harold Logan an excellent chance to win on speed. He went his last mile in 2.3 2-5, a half in 1.1, and broke 58 over the final quarter. On the final day of the Grand National meeting Harold Logan won the Farewell Handicap in 2.38 2-5, and knocked 58 over the final quarter. It will be seen that Harold Logan has on more than one occasion cut a final quarter well under a two-minute gait, and it must be obvious that a slow-run race is right in his favour. Pie has a 4.16 2-5 record put up under favourable conditions. Harold Logan has won the Trotting Cup in 4.18 2-5 and 4.16 2-5, and this year is on a 4.20 handicap. If they wait until he gets well and safely balanced .for speed over a final half it will take a good one to beat him. A slow-run race would make it a gift for him. It is also worth remembering that Harold’ Logan stepped 4.13 2-5 When the track and atmosphere conditions were perfect, and there is not the slightest doubt about his speed and stamina.

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME.

Nov. 4, 6—Auckland. Nov. 4,6, 8, 11— Canterbury Nov. !»; 11—Whangarei. Nov. 11—Hawke’s Bay. Nov. 15—Dannevirke. Nov. IS—Carterton. Nov. 18, 20—Waikato. Nov. 25—Levin. Nov. 30, Dec. 2—Takapuna. Nov. 30, Dec. 2—Feilding.

Green on Golden Wings: It is reported that T. Green will lido Golden Wings in the Stewards' Handicap. East wood's Rides:

A. H. Eastwood’s engagements for Riccarton include Coronilla in the Welcome Stakes, Silver Streak in the Stewards’ Handicap, and Rocket in the New Zealand Cup.

Red Manfred: F. Davis, with Red Manfred and Pin Money, and' G. AV. B. Greene’s team, consisting of Passion Fruit, Emotion, Manuiri and Brambletorn, has arrived at Riccarton. Red Manfred has improved with the racing he had at Trentham.

Lordly Knight: Has arrived at Riccarton, and is one of those in favour lor the Stewards’ Handicap. ,Shatter’,s Trouble:

Is probably a matter of the heart, as he has been saddling up this season as lit as a horse could be made.

Westland Foalings: Fairy Tidings, and Note recently Slipped foals to the imported horse Dolomite. Fairy Tidings has a filly foal.

Mullaboden's Consorts:

Tho Irish-bred five-year-old horse, Mullaboden, is receiving encouraging patronage in the Westland district, and the following mares have been booked to him, Miss Mercia, Waraloon, Para, Atone, Goldwell, Gala, Rina Munga, Missland, and Corinthic.

Palantua: Two hard races on two consecutive days lightened most of the horses raced at the Gore meeting. At Wingatui on Sunday morning Palantua was treated to trotting and cantering. She has lightened up as a result of racing at Gore.

Coronilla Has Speed: Several of the two-year-olds who aro engaged in the Welcome Stakes have shown smart form this season. None of them, however, has made a better impression than Coronilla (says “The Watcher”), who won the Taita Handicap at Trentham last week. Her exceptional speed will ensure her a good position early, and the only point in doubt is her ability to run out the fifth furlong. However, if she repeats her Trentham form she will be so far in front at the end of tour that she will be able to afford to stop a bit over the final furlong. ML Veteran IWdjer: H. Donovan, who is to ride Minerval in the New Zealand Cup, is a veritable veteran of the pigskin. The last important winner he steered was Magdala in the Winter Cup of 1912. Donovan won Ihe D.J.C. Birthday Handicap on Quiltiri in 1896, the Forbury Handicap on Black and Gold in 1897, the New Zealand St. Leger on Kelburn in 1903, and the Great Easter on Lady Lillian in the same year. He also rode over sticks, and if he could land the New' Zealand Cup he would get a great reception from the “boys.”

Epigram Does Fine Trial: The feature of the track work at Trentham on Saturday morning "was the excellent New Zealand Cup trial done by Epigram, who ran a. mile and a-quarter on the plough in 2.8 2-5. The going was fast, but Epigram -went really well, and finished up his task like a horse who could have gone on a good way afterwards. Epigram ran the first two furlongs alone in 25 3-5 secs., and was picked up then by Bettswycocd. The pair ran together for the next seven furlongs, after which Epigram drew' out and was about four lengths clear of the filly at the finishing line. The first half-mile took 51 2-ssecs„ the first six furlongs 1.16 3-5. To do the last mile in 1.43, and the last three furlongs in 39secs., even on a fast plough, is a. good gallop at Trentham.' Epigram was to have been ridden in the Cup by G. Duncan, but owing to his suspension, W. E. Pine, of Hawera, has been selected.

FIELDS FOR N.Z. CUP DAY.

POLYDORA AND TAKAKUA OUT

Acceptances for the first day (Saturday) of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meeting, are strong in number and quality. The two horses most sought after in the New Zealand Cup, Polydora, and Takakua, failed to make the final payment. Polydora’s defection came as a surprise. Although she knocked one of her legs last week, she quickly threw off the effects, and it was the intention of H. Nurse to resume serious work with her to-day. Polydora has never required much galloping to keep her at her best, and it was generally considered that her compulsory let-up would not have such serious results as might apply to the majority of gallopers. Evidently no chance was being taken with her, and she will probably be seen out later at the mting. The scratching of Polydora. will be a body blow to early investors. The withdrawal of Takakua, regarded as the likely second favourite on the day, and Speedmint, who will race at Auckland, leaves the livid of liiirtecn'as a difficult puzzle for investor.".. The lour best now appear in Rocket, Southdown, Eminent, and Brambletorn.

Souchong and Gay Shiela failed to make the payment in the Stewards' Handicap, leaving a. field of twelve. Gay Shiela will compete at Ellerslie, where she is engaged in the Great Northern Guineas. The fields for

other events on the opening day are decidedly good, and racing should be of a high standard. The acceptance list is as follows:—

TOTE IN BRITAIN

LONDON, October 30. How the totalisator has gripped Britain is shown by the fact that the Racecourse Betting Control Board’s turnover for the year has already passed four million sterling, thus ensuing a record year. It is calcualted that from fifteen to twenty million totalisator bets have already been handled in 1933.
