The death has occurred of Dr. W. E. Herbert, a well-known Wellington surgeon, aged 72 years.—Press Assn.

The death is announced from London of Sir Augustus C. F. Fitzgeorge, a great-grandson of George the Third, and cousin to Queen Mary. He was born in 1847, being the third son of the Duke of Cambridge and Mis. Fitzgeorge.

A Sydnev cablegram announced the death of the Rev. Alexander Millet, formerly minister of the Presb J' tel^’ 1 , Church at Westport, who, at the ag<> of 72, died suddenly yesterday, at Chatswood. Deceased recently visited Westport,

The death occurred at the Grey River Hospital this morning, of Thomas Bowman, single, a- native ot Greymouth, aged 47 years. The deceased, who had been ailing for about a fortnight, was formerly employed as an engine-driver by the Railway Department, and was for many years a waterside worker. He is survived by three sisters, Mesdames Cameron (Wellington), Duncan (Dunedin), and Arnold (Greymouth). and three brothers, Robert (Greymouth), William (Australia), and Harold (Wellington). The funeral will take place to-morrow, at. Karoro Cemetery.

A Wellington telegram announced the death of Mr Robert Henry Medland, a well-known bowler, of the Thorndon Club, in his ninetieth year. His parents came to New Zealand in the ship Amelia Thompson, and landed at New Plymouth in 1841. Mr Medland was born in 1844. As a boy he was apprenticed to the “Taranaki News,” and later became overseer of the “Taranaki Herald.” He went to Wellington to enter the Government printing office, and retired in 1909, after 35 years’ service. Mr Medland saw a good deal of the Maori Wars. When only sixteen years of age he joined the Taranaki Rifle Volunteers in which he served five years. He went with an expedition to recover the bodies after the Whitecliff’s: massacre in February 1869. This was the occasion on which a party of Waikato natives came down to (he Taranaki district and massacred Rev. Whiteley, two military settlers, Messrs Milne and Richards, and Lieut. Gascoigne, his wife and three children. The block house and whares had been burned down and the natives had disappeared when the expedition arrived.

Mesdames Evans. Keating. and Power were joint hostesses at an enjoyable evening hold ar the residence of Mrs Evans, Aickens, on Saturday night, in honour of Mr Hepburn' Jackson, of “Sherwood Forest,” Aickens, on the eve of his marriage to Miss Louisa Rowe, of Hokitika. Dancing and games were enjoyed by all. The music was supplied by the “Youngman Brothers,” Aickens. During the evening. Mr Keating, on behalf of all present, expressed pleasure in presenting Mr Jackson and Miss Rowe, with a 36-pieco dinner set, with the best of good wishes and good luck in their future married life. Mr Evans spoke on behalf of the residents of Aickens, and emphasised the good fellowship of Mr Jackson, and the high esteem in which lie was held. On behalf of the many Otira friends, Mr Wearn endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers. Mr Jackson suitably replied. Supper was served by the hostesses. Visitors attended from Hokitika and Kokiri. Among those present were: Mesdames Aicken, Evans, Power, Keating, Meyers, Youngman, Wearn, Harris, Jackson, Smith, Webber, and Mead. Misses Youngman, Power, Evans, Morrison, Denny, Rowe (3), Walker, Evans, Rochford and Williams. Messrs Evans, Meyers, Jackson (5), Youngman (3), Fitzgerald, Bonisch, Wearn, Mead, Webber, Keating, Wilson, Kirkland (Ross), Harris and Phillipson.
