NOTES ON THE RACING.

[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, October 28.

Rebel Star Wins: . The big field for the Okains Trial Stakes got away in line, but some were slow in getting into their strides, including Liege Lord, Red Dance, and Golden Dart. At the end of a furlong, Proscenium and Rebel Star were out in front from Silver Jest, Silk Arrow, Top Rank, Red Dance, and Variant. Silver Jest received a set-back near the three furlongs post, but recovered lost ground rounding the turn into the straight, and was in close attendance on the two leaders commencing the run home. Proscenium retired at the distance, and Silver Jest threw out a challenge to Rebel Star, who, however, had too much in hand and won decisively by a length. Vintage finished with a burst of speed to beat Proscenium on the post for third money. Variant, Silk Arrow, Wild Sky and Top Rank were next. The winner, who is closely related to Polydora on the female side, was having his second race only, and displayed a marked turn of speed. He is owned by the trotting trainer, J. S. Shaw, who recently paid 100 guineas for him from H. Nurse. Silver Jest was unlucky, but in any case, he would have fou,nd it difficult to have given any more trouble to the winner, who could have done better if called upon. Vintage, by Shambles, was not well placed early, but was responsible for a brilliant effort in the last two furlongs. Proscenium, who claims Solwit. as his sire, displayed plenty of pace, but could not see out the ordeal. The Higlnveight; High Tor scored a.comfortable win in the Kaituna Highweight Hack Handicap. She was in last place behind a bunched field over the first half of the journey, but moved up into third place rounding the home turn and followed Verden and Silver Briar into the straight. The last-named pair were in trouble at the distance, and High Tor, taking charge, went on to win by over a length from Fleeting Glance, who finished strongly to beat Silver Briar by half a length. Verden weakened into fourth place in front of Elude and Nightguard. This was High Tor’s first win for twelve months. She moved very short in both the' preliminary and in the early stages of the race, but went freely when warmed up. Fleeting Glance added another placed’ performance to her record, and has l yet to win a race for her present owner. Silver Briar, by Silverado from Paper Rose, showed a turn of speed while she lasted. Verden failed to stay, while both Elude and Nightguard were not dangerous over the final stages.

'Favourite Prevails: Yankeeland, favourite for the Duvauchelle Handicap Trot, led the field practically from barrier rise, while the second choice, Real Burton, was never far from him and finished a good second. Yankeeland was followed over the middle stages l by Dandy Locanda, Bide a’Wee, Real Burton, and General Sarsfield, all racing in fairly close order. Yankeeland had a useful lead entering the straight, and although threatened at one stage of the run home by Real Burton, he had too much in hand, and had two lengths to spare at the post. Dandy Locanda was a fair third, clear of Bide a Wee, and then came Great Seaman, Camera and General Sarsfield'.

Return to Form: Ramo recorded a somewhat overdue win in the Akaroa Handicap. A muddling pace was established from the start, and there was no perceptible increase until about three furlongs from home. Sweet Agnes was then in charge from Jaloux, with Silvox, Water Polo, Ranelagh and Ramo all racing in close order. Sweet Agnes entered the straight just in front of Silvox and Jaloux together with Ranelagh and Ramo in close attendance. All these bunched inside the distance, but half a furlong from home, Ramo put in his claim, and' staying on the best, won by a length from Jaloux, who cut down Silvox in the last few strides. Sweet Agnes was 3 close fourth, and -was followed by Water Polo, Minerval and Ranelagh in that order.

The race was run to order for Ramo, the slow pace adopted over the early stages giving him the best chance to settle down he has had for some time. He has always raced well at Motukarara and has figured as a winner of two Peninsula Cups. He is j a true stayer, and will have to beseriously considered in the New Zealand Cup. Jaloux ran his best race this season, but cannot on this effort alone be considered a good proposition to follow. Silvox was fighting for his head for the first few furlongs and did not complete his task as well as expected. Sweet Agnes had to act as pacemaker, but was also kept in restraint until given her head at the borne turn. The journey proved beyond her, but the race would nevertheless point to her prospects as an Oaks candidate. Minerval drifted back to the rear half-way through, and although finishing in front of Ranelagh, he failed to improve his position to any extent in the run home. Ranelagh looked a likely winner when he moved up to the leaders on the rails at the distance, but his effort was surprisingly limited, and he stopped very badly nearing -the post.

Sensational Dividend: The result of the Halswell Hack Handicap provided the biggest sensation in the Canterbury area for many years. The winner, Sibella, only had two tickets on her for a win, and she paid a sum reaching over three centuries. Errantry and Falkland were the early leaders and entered the straight in front of Tuirau, Royal Amphora and Sibella. Falkland was in charge a hundred yards from the post, but weakened under pressure, and Sibella finishing fast on the outside, got up to gain a length verdict from Bon Tray, who came from the back with a telling run to beat Falkland in the last stride. Royal Amphora was next in front of Tuirau and Haere Tonu.

The winner was having her first race and is the first foal of Zaragoza who recently died 1 . She was expected to race well, but was supported only as a place proposition by the stable, and for a small amount only. Bon Tray was not well placed until well into the straight, and his finishing run attracted special attention. Falkland, who won over a mile at Dunedin, surprisingly did not stay on after having every chance. Royal Amphora was disappointing, but will do better later.

Success for Manetho: Investors fared more favourably in the Le Bons Handicap, the three best supported filling the places. Cranford rushed to the front after three furlongs had' been covered, and had a useful lead from Manetho, The Quorn, White Doe and Monastic. Manetho closed on the leader as soon as the run home was commenced, and after a brief struggle, drew away to win easily from Cranford, who also comfortably held off the fast finishing White Doe. Wise Choice also executed good work over the closing stages, and finished a close fourth in front of Monastic, Heather Glow, Rational II and Argentic, with The Quorn last.

A Comfortable Victory: Warpath recorded an impressive win in the Little River Trot. He was in fourth place over the first half of the journey, but then disputed the lead with Royal Ando and this pair led into the straight from Harvester, Grand Author and Agile. Warpath drew away in the run home, and won by two lengths from Grand Author, who beat Agile by three lengths. Harvestin, Paul Drusus and Wise Guy were next.

Finale to Favourite: Gaysome, a good favourite for the Brackenfield Flying Hack Handicap, shot to the front at the end of two furlongs, and was not afterwards headed. She was followed into the straight by Top Rank, Cleaner, Niggerhead and Lady Zephyr, and although Niggerhead and later Final Shot made determined challenges, she hung on to win by half a length from Final Shot, who got up to beat Niggerhead by a neck. Sam Smith, who was last away, did well to get up into fourth place, and he was followed by Lady Zephyr, Importance and Cleaner.
