REEFTON NOTES

[our own correspondent.] REEFTON, October 30. Reefton experienced a day of steady solid rain on Saturday, the downpour continuing almost without cessation from early in the morning. The rain would be welcomed by farmers and gardeners, and crops are looking fresh and green. The rain marred two sporting fixtures set down for Saturday afternoon. The newly formed Thistle Tennis Club which has been inaugurated by the young people of Knox Church was to have held its official opening, but this had to be postponed and the Reefton Golf Club were also to hold their closing function but the vain compelled postponement. A hard-up masquerade dance was held in the band room on Friday night conducted by the Reefton Ladies’ Hockey Club. The funds were to be handed to the X-ray Fund for the hospital, and there was a record attendance. Music was supplied by Mesdames Archer, Magee and Ecklund and an enjoyable time was spent by all. The quarterly re-union of the Reefton Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday night. Mr. W. S. Pratt (president) occupied the chair and there was an attendance of thirty members. A motion of condolence was passed and it was resolved that the sympathy of the Association be conveyed to Mrs. Shaw. Members standing in silence, for the passing of the motion. The work of the quarter was reviewed by the chairman, who stated that an endeavour had been made to participate in the funds of the National War Council, but to date no move had been made by the local Patriotic Association. It was resolved that the Patriotic Association be asked to meet the branch on the question. It was resolved that the executive appoint an officer to visit the hospital regularly to attend Ito the needs of returned soldier inmates also that the graves of any soldiers in the Reefton cemeteries be attended to regularly. A discussion on finance took place, and’ it was resolved to approach the Minister of Internal Affairs for permission to conduct a small art union; also that the Association conduct a ball early in January. Musical items were provided by Messrs G. McLoughlin and J. Morris and supper was served. Miss M. Austin who has been on holiday in Canterbury has returned to Reefton. The first annual function of the Inangahua Rugby League Centre was held in the band room, in the form of a smoke concert. In spite of the inclement weather, a good crowd attended. Members of the League Centre present were: Messrs C. Coxall, C. Curtis, J. Guy, Erickson, J. Schofield, W. Morris. Representatives of other bodies present were: Messrs W. F. Archer (Inangahua County Council), T. Hepburn (Inangahua Rugby SubUnion), W. Blom (Reefton Golf Club), Dr. Marshall (Reefton Athletic. Club). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs T. Anisy, G. Ward, McKane, H. Ord, M. Morris and G. Dutton.

The Chairman, Mr. C. Coxall, proposed the toast of the Patron, His Majesty the King, which was followed with the National Anthem. In proposing the toast of “The West Coast League,” Mr. Guy, secretary Inangahua League, congratulated that body on the able manner in which it controlled the League on the Coast,- and also on the fine performance of the touring team in winning the Northern Union Cup. Mr. T. McKenzie, captain of the Reefton senior team, said it was a great pleasure to propose the toast of the Inangahua Rugby League Centre. “Sometimes,” he stated, “decisions of controlling bodies made the players and teams a little ‘hot under the collar,’ but it must always be remembered that the clubs elect the Management Committe and must abide by their decisions as these men are there in the interests of the players.” In concluding, Mr. McKenzie congratulated the Centre on their able control during the season and extended, best wishes for the future.

Messrs Curtis, Guy, Erickson and Schofield Mr. T. Baird proposed the toast of “Kindred Sports” and appealed to the sports of Reefton to display unity of purpose and by doing so put Reefton on the, map of sportsmanship.—Responded to by G. Lockington (swimming), C. Coxall (cycling), T. Hepburn (Rugby), W. F. Archer (Trotting), Clarkson (cricket), K. Auld (tennis), and AV. Blom (golf). Mr. Coxall presented the trophies won during the season as follow: — White Horse Cup: Rovers (Mr. Guy). Flannigan Cup: Waratahs (Mr. Hay). Knock-out Cup: Ahaura (Mr. Erickson). Morris Cup and Cockerill Cup: Mawhcraiti (Mr. Marsden), O’Donnell Cup: Reefton Juniors (Mr. AV. Barrow. Challenge Cup: Waiuta (Mr. Bright), Miniature Cup: Uniteds (Mr. Honey).

The Northern Union Cup was also on view. A presentation was made to the three Inangahua Representatives in the AVest Coast touring team, Messrs Dutton, Robertson and Morris. Mr. J. Robertson and Mr. Morris senr., responding. Mr. Guy proposed the toast of the “Referees” which was responded to by Mr. AV. Parsonage, Mr. G. Lockington proposed “The Donors of the Cups” responded to by Mr. Moj'ris. Mr. T. Hepburn in proposing the toast of “The Ladies” pointed out the valuable assistance given sports in their various activities. Dr. Marshall thanked Mr. Hepburn on their behalf. Mr. AV. F. Archer proposed the toast of “The Press,” responded to by Mesrs A. Marsden and T. McKenzie. Mi-. Coxall proposed the toast, of “The Artists,” responded to by Messrs Auld, Spencer and A. Archer. Mr. Hepburn and Mr. Archer spoke of the success of the evening and extended best

wishes to the League, to which Mr. Coxall replying cong.ratulated Mr. Guy

on the able manner he had carried

Athletic Club, appealed for more support for his club, and stated that he

wished it to uphold its reputation as

the best club meeting on the Coast. Items given during the evening were: Sengs, J. Hutchison, O. Hoy, J. Jackson, H. Spencer, A. Archer; step dances, A. Triggance; mouth-organ solo, AV. Barrow; piano solo, Mr K. Auld; recitation, Mr AA’. Blom. The function was brought to a close amid cheers and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
