A New York cablegram announced the death of Edward Hugh Sothern, the famous American Shakespearean actor of a generation ago, due to pneumonia. His wife, Julia. Marlowe, coplayer, was at his bedside. Both returned from England three weeks, ago, where the actor became ill.

The death occurred yesterday, of Mr John Staines, formerly a storekeeper in Kanieri, and at one time a member of the Westland County Council, of which he was also Chairman. He was 67 years of age, and a native of Victoria. He leaves a. family of six, in the North Island, and a brother Mr Thomas Staines, ami a sister. Mrs H. B. Preston, of Hokitika.

The death occurred on Saturday evening at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. A. Reynolds, South Beach, of Mrs. Emma Ashton, a native of Staffordshire, England, aged 85 years. The deceased came to New Zealand as a child of ten years, and resided in Canterbury for about 20 years. She then left for Canada with her husband, and spent 30 years there, where her husband predeceased her sixteen years ago. In 1918, she returned to New Zealand, and had since resided at South Beach. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. A. Reynolds and Mrs. Regg (Canada), also twelve grandchildren, and three great-grand children. The interment took place at Karoro Cemetery to-day.
