FOUND SHOT.
NEW PLYMOUTH. October 27
The body of Edgar Carryer, a business man, of Stratford, retired and residing at New Plymouth, was found among the trees at Kawaroa Park this evening. There was a gun beside the body. Carryer had been missing since October 11, since when a search for him had been continuous, as many as 130 searchers being engaged.
PRINTERS FINED.
WELLINGTON, October 27.
Giving a reserved decision in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr Page, S.M., imposed the minimum penalty of £5 upon L. T. Watkins, Ltd. for omitting to place the name and registered office of the company on a paper printed by it. The fact that defendant printed the paper, which purported to a copy of two articles published in the “Rielbourne Argus” was admitted,, but counsel for the defence contended that the paper came within an exemption set out in Section 8 of Printers and Newspapers Registration Act, 1908.
Mr Page said he did not think that the. articles could be held to come within the exemption set out in Clause 8, and he decided that defendants had committed a breach of the Statute.
COMPENSATION AWARD.
DUNEDIN, October 26
The hearing was continued in the Supreme Court this morning of the case in which Charles Adolph Edvert Johnson, a labourer, of Dunedin, claimed £2107/10/- from John Beresford Gillies, a salesman, of Dunedin, as damages for injuries received through being knocked down by a motor-car in Princess street south, on the night of June 20 of last year. The plaintiff, who lost a leg as a result of his injury, alleged negligence against the defendant. Evidence was heard at length, and the jury awarded plaintiff damages amounting to £1407 10/-. Mr A. C. Hanlon, for the defendant, gave notice to move for a new trial, on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence.
TARIFF COMMISSION WELLINGTON, October 27
The free entry of British anaesthetics and supplies of certain drugs in ('ampoules bacteriological and animal gland preparations and a duty against goods coming from foreign countries, were sought by G. Davis, Dominion Dental Supplies Co., in an application heard by the Tariff Commission this afternoon. In respect to ether and chloroform from foreign, sources a duty of 2/- lb. was asked for. The imposition of a tariff on petroleum and fuel oils used on land, and imported bitumen and asphalts, was sought by the Gas Companies’ Association of New Zealand, in an application brought before the Commission by M. J. Kennedy, general manager of the Wellington Gas Company, and F. W. Belton, Engineer of the Christchurch Gas Coy. The Association suggested a duty of 50 per cent, on the present selling price of imported oil or 21 per gallon, and in the case of bitumen and asphalts, a duty of £2/ 10/- a ton.
