CRICKET

WEST COAST COMPETITIONS. MARIST AND UNITED WIN. The West Coast Cricket Association commenced the season’s competition matches yesterday. Prospects of play on Saturday were eliminated by heavy rain, which also threatened a postponement of Sunday play- The Recreation Ground at Greymouth, however, quickly drained the moisture, and' was in fair order for the start of play, to improve as the afternoon advanced. United met Runanga at the Rec., and having first use of the wicket knocked up a respectable total before declaring. Runanga batsmen were unable to deal with the bowling, and failed by one run, to avert an innings defeat. At Dillmanstown, Marist secured ah easy victory over Kumara, they, as was the case with United, securing a three-point win. The Cobden Domain and the B ground at the Rec. not being in suitable order for play, the matches set down for decision there had' to be postponed. It was a bowlers’ day yesterday, and several good averages were secured, but there were also creditable displays of batting, and the prospects generally, point to a successful season. UNITED AND RUNANGA.

By an innings and one run, United accounted for Runanga. Grooby and Restieaux opened for United, and commenced quietly. In the third over, with 10 on the board, Grooby was dismissed by the wicket-keeper off the bowling of Smithson. McLaughlin joined Restieaux and immediately set about scoring, the partnership being responsible for 23 runs before Restieaux played on a fast ball from Timlin. Nightingale was next to make his stand, and with McLaughlin quickly carried the score to 87, before a separation was effected. With three wickets down, and the tally 87, United looked like making a heavy score, but the remaining six batsmen to take the wickets collapsed, only two runs being added by them. United declared with the score at 9 wickets for 106. Runanga bowlers had fared well, especially Smithson, who took five wickets for 21 runs.

The wicket was drying fast, and the bowlers were definitely holding an advantage when Runanga went in. The collapse that came, however, was a surprise. Restieaux and Rapley were unplayable to the Rfinanga eleven, and the team had returned to the pavilion with only 20 runs having been scored. A much better showing was made in the second innings, double figures being secured’ by Wilson, Bannister, Garvey, and Kennedy, but by one run, Runanga failed’ to reach, in two innings, the score o£ United’s first. Restieaux again bowled exceptionally well, and finished the day with the splendid average of 9 wickets for 25 runs.
