HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, September 9. The Hokitika Borough Council met. last evening; present. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry). Crs. T. W. Duff, A. E. Armstrong. Jas. King, I). Teichelmann, M. McGavin, D. P. Stuart, A. J. Thompson, G. Heinz. An apology was ten- > dered for the absence of Cr. Elcock. The Secretary. Wairoa Harbour Board, wrote asking whether this Council supports resolutions 1 to 6 passed by Conference of Local Bodies held at Wairoa on June 10 last, in respect of recovery of rates against, occupied Crown Lands or lands mortgaged to the Crown etc.—Resolved that the Council support the resolutions. J. T. Troughear, that the Council support the resolutions, asking permission to build a small lint on the .Gibson’s Quay road reserve near the east town belt. —The Council although having no authority to permit, offer no objection. W. J. Orpwood, applied (1) for grazing rights over Municipal Res. No. 575, Jollie St., and offering 10/- per half-year rental, Council to have right to resume the reserve at any time, and (2) asking for grazing rights over Hoffman St., road reserves between Stafford and Hampden Streets, and offering to keep fences in repair and the land clear of growth.—Granted. The Westland Rugby Football SubUnion applied for permission to have the absolute use of Cass Square on Saturday, September 23, for a. football match, Buller v. West Coast, with authority to charge an admission fee of 1/-.—Granted. The Invercargill City Council wrote pointing out that in regard to lovies under the Fire Brigades Act, 1926, ia good fire fighting service has the effect of reducing to a minimum the risk of fire loss, whic his greatly to the benefit of the fire insurance companies, and suggesting that a remit be. placed before the -next Municipal Conference, asking an Amendment to the Fire Board’s Act in the direction of making provision for increasing the Insurance Coy’s, proportion of Fire Board Levies, and a consequent reduction of contributions of local bodie.s. —Consideration held over. C. E. Sparkes, sanitary contractor, accepted an extension ot the sannary contract to the 31st July, 1936, under the conditions stated in the Council’s letter dated August 25, 1933. The Auditor-General, under Sec. 40 (h) of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, authorised the Council to purchase timber from the KanieriHokitika Sawmilling Company, to the value of £5O during the current financial year. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £859/18/2; payments £983/19/4; debit balance £1074/6/5. Accounts amounting '.to £709/3/11 were passed for payment. The foreman reported on work carried out during the month, and stated there was an average of 7ft Ilin of water in the reservoir. At the suggestion of Cr. King, it was resolved to have a portion of Tancred Street put. in order, The Abattoirs manager reported stock slaughtered during the month: 9 cows, 22 heifers, 79 bullocks, 233 sheep, 30 lambs, 7 pigs, 6 calves; condemned, 2 cows, 1 bullock, 1 sheep. Fees received £64/3/-, compared with £62/15/6 for the same period ■ last year. Cr King, by notice, moved that a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs Duff, Thompson, and himself, be set up to enquire and report at next meeting on the question of charging extraordinary water fees for all patents and w.c. —Carried. Cr Heinz drew attention to the number of leaky taps around the town, and suggested that the Conned should insist upon good quality taps being used. A by-law was read dealing with this subject. It was pointed out also that the Greymouth Borough Council had a by-law on the same matter.
