RUGBY FOOTBALL

SOUTHLAND v. S. CANTERBURY.

[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]

TIMARU, August 16. En route to Christchurch to play Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield, the Southland reps, broke their journey at Timaru, and, to-day, defeated South Canterbury by 24 to 11. The big Southland forwards shone in short passing, while the tackling of the side was a feature. Southland saw more of the ball in the line-outs and scrums, and many strong loose rushes that were very difficult to stop. The visiting back line was minus four who are expected to participate in the Shield match, and was not so impressive as expected. Tries were scored for the visitors by Bruce (2), Frampton, Mitchell, Purdue and Southern; Porter converting two and Sharp one. Adkins secured three tries for South Canterbury, Duke converting one. MARLBOROUGH v. ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, August 16. Marlborough beat Ashburton by 20 points to six in a fairly fast and open game, the teams being well matched in the first spell, but the visitors’ backs were superior in the second half. The scores at half-time were eight to six, Marlborough having a try scored by Oldham and converted by Lane and a penalty by Lane. Ashburton had tries by Bradford and Davison. Ashburton forwards played pluckily in the second half, being unfortunate in not scoring once or twice. The visitors’ backs improved in passing and the local men were unequal to the demand upon them. The visitors’ score was increased by tries by H. Phillips (2) and Lane, and a penalty by McDonald. TARANAKI V. WAIKATO. ELTHAM, August 16. Perfect conditions prevailed for the Taranaki v. Waikato match at Eltham, the former winning by the narrow margin of one point. Sullivan (2), Edward's (2), and S. Fookes scored tries for Taranaki and All Black Collins converted two. Aitken (2) and Carroll scored tries for Waikato, W. Cameron converting all three and kicking a penalty goal. Both teams played good open football with bright, snappy passing. Waikato were particularly smart in developing the attacking movements and were lucky to meet weak tackling. Taranaki started tamely, improving as the game advanced. The half-time scores were: — Taranaki 10, Waikato 8. In the second spell scores came fast, Tarnaki scoring three unconverted tries and Waikato two converted tries, the final scores being: Taranaki 19, Waikato 18. WANGANUI v. HAWKE’S BAY WANGANUI, August 16. Wanganui defeated Hawke’s Bay today by 21 to 17, in a bright display of Rugby. Up to half time it looked as though the visitors would outclass the home fifteen, but a change that came over Wanganui van in the second spell was a surprise, crushing the visiting van, and enabling Wanganui to play their backs into action with some purpose. AUSTRALIANS WIN. (Received August 17, 10 a.m.) CAPETOWN, August 16. The Wallabies defeated Southwestern Province by 21 to 14, at Oudtshoorn. LAKE BRUNN EK NOTES. RU RU v. KOTUKU. Ru Ru defeated Kotuku at Mo.ana on Sunday last by 19 points to 6 in the Field Cup fixture. Kotuku exercised their right to challenge for the Fenton Cup. The teams were: —

Kotuku: M. Molloy, E. Butcher, J. Warren, E. Ord, V. Pawson, Donald, T. Southern, Priest, Crimmins, J. Bryan, E. Hocking, C. O’Leary, C. Bryan.

Ru Ru: J. Glover, Connors, L. Southern, C. Robinson, F. Daniel, R. Bircheld, M. Southern, N. Willis, J. Willis, F. Dunstan, B. Bircheld, S. Chamberlain, J. Robinson, H. Southern, H* Feary. Kotuku were first to attack their forwards, keeping on the ball, giving the Ru Ru, backs no room to work in. Ru Ru forwards eventually cleared with short rushes, and Kotuku had a turn on defence. Offside play by Ord gave R. Birchfield a possible chance, which he turned to account with a fine kick from 35 yards out. Ru Ru 3, Kotuku nil. Shortly afterwards Kotuku were attacking, when Ru Ru forwards broke away and a fine rush ended in H. Southern going over in a handy position. R. Birchfield converted. Ru Ru S, Kotuku nil. Kotuku set up a strong attack, Daniel being penalised in front of the post for lying on the ball. Warren made no mistake with an easy kick. Rußu 8, Kotuku 3. Kotuku had much the better of the remainder of the spell. From a penalty wide-out. J. Malloy placed his men in front of the goal, then short-kicked over the line, to score a smart try. The kick failed. Ru Ru 8, Kotuku 6. Half-time was called shortly afterwards. The Ru Ru forwards had the upper hand during the second half, and were well supported by the backs. B. Birchfield was first to dive over, for Ru Ru. R. Birchfield converted with another fine kick. Ru Ru 13, Kotuku 6. Shortly afterwards Ru Ru put the issue beyond doubt with a splendid try. IVI. Southern sent out smartly for R. Bircheld, Daniel, L. Southorn and C. Robinson to handle in turn, the latter going over wide out. R. Bircheld. failed with the kick. Ru Ru 16, Kotuku 6. L. Southorn raised Ru Ru’s score to 19 with a try in the corner. After a good run, Kotuku were almost over during the closing stages of the game, but the Ru Ru forwards were able to keep them out, and carry play black to Kotuku,’s line. When time was called the scores were Ru Ru 19, Kotuku 6.

Mr G. Kinraid controlled the game. For Kotuku, J. Bryan and J. Molloy were the pick of the forwards, while C. Bryan showed out on occasions. M. Molloy at full-back handled well and kicked with fine judgment. J. Warren and Donald also played well. For Ru Ru, the forwards all played well, playing as a team and backing up splendidly. Of the backs, L. Southern and R. Birchfield played their usual games, while Daniel served as a useful link between Birchfield and Southern. M. Southern at half played his first competition game of football, and was quite a success, being above the average half-back, particularly with his quick clearing kicks from the base of the scrum. Stillwater were to meet Kopara, ami set out with a strong team, but unfortunately, a break-down occurred on

the outward’ journey, and the match did not take plac. The Dittman Shield team to travel to Hokitika, will be published next week, and it is hoped that all selected will mak e the trip, particularly emergencies. Some players appear to be of the opinion that emergencies are of no importance, and consequently fail to put in an appearance. The selectors have no intention of considering players who fail to put in an appearance or notify, with a reason, their inability to travel. The Juniors selected for Saturday’s curtain-raiser at Greymouth. should note,
