SLEEPING SICKNESS
NORTH AUCKLAND OUTBREAK. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WHANGAREI, August 15. Strenuous endeavours are being made by Dr. Cook, Medical Officer of Health, to combat the spread of sleeping sickness, an outbreak of which has developed in the Kaikohe-Rawene. districts. . . The disease is said to have originated in the crowded living conditions among the natives. Schools have closed at Lower Hokianga and Northern Bay of Islands. Large gatherings of Maoris are banned including a hui promoted at Kaikohe for the purpose of welcoming Ratana. On the Medical Officer’s advice, the natives agreed to defer the project until conditions permit.
