By unanimous vote, the Farmers and Settlers’ Conference decided in view of past experience to urge the Country Party, not to agree to any pre-election pact with the United Australia Party, for next Federal election. The Conference emphatically protested against the present exorbitant tariff. POLICE INSPECTOR’S INCOME. BRISBANE. August 11. A deficiency of approximately £14,000 in income tax returns, of SubInspector Joseph Campbell, of the Queensland Police Force, was alleged in the Summons Court, when a police magistrate fined Campbell £lOO, for making a false return. CONSTABLE SPEARED. DARWIN, August 12. Constable Albert McColl was speared by blacks at. Mr Tretowan, M.L.C., says the motion of the Farmers' Conference, urging the disfranchising of persons convicted of disloyalty to the Empire, was aimed at the Communists, whose'disloyal action and speeches should' be brought to an end.
