10 YEARS AND CAT

FOR BANK RAID. LONDON, June 29. Two brothers were each sentenced to ten years’ penal servitude and fifteen strokes of the cat at Newcastle Assizes yesterday. They were two of three men who pleaded guilty to the armed robbery at the Cattle Market branch of Lloyds Bank, Newcastle, on June 2. Passing sentence, Mr. Justice Charles said: “You have carried out a raid which, thank goodness, is practically unknown in this country. When it is carried out it must and shall be suppressed with an iron hand.” The men sentenced to ten years’ penal servitude and the cat were Joseph Duffy, 30, and Thomas Duffy. 28, both of Edinburgh. The third man, William Myles Ab-, hot, of Edinburgh, described by Mr." Justice Charles as a catspaw. was sentenced lo twelve months’ imprisonment in the second division.

A man named Black was sentencedi at a. previous sessions to twelve months’ imprisonment and eighteen strokes with the birch in connection} with the same affair. *
