THEFT CHARGES ADMITTED. [per press association.] AUCKLAND, August 10. Arrested in Sydney and extradited, James Duggan Stephens, 26, formerly estates clerk in the Public Trust Office, Auckland, to-day pleaded guilty to 25 charges of theft and forgery. The amounts stolen totalled £259. Evidence was given by a number of women beneficiaries in estates administered by the Public Trustee that the signatures on vouchers for various sums were not in their handwriting, and they did not receive the money. An Inspector said when he began investigations, accused had already left the Department, his services being terminated owing to his unsatisfactory work. His salary was £196 13/-. A detective said that accused fully admitted the offences. Accused was committed for sentence. Bail was not sought.
