POWER BOARD’S LOAN. INVERCARGILL, August 8

Whether the interest on the Board's London loans should be paid in New Zealand currency or in sterling was again discussed at. to-day’s meeting of (ho Southland Electric Power Board at a special meeting of the Board. Previously it. had been decided to give the Government, an assurance to pay the interest in sterling on the next payment in September; but to-day notice of motion was given to rescind that, resolution. The Board also decided that it could not give the assurance as requested by the Government to refrain from legal action in London.

DAIRY FACTORY ON FIRE. STRATFORD, August. 9, The Waingongoro Dairy Factory was destroyer! by fire yesterday morning. When noticed, the flames had a firm hold, and it was impossible to save the building, which was built of corrugated iron with wooden framework. The cause of the fire is unknown, as the factory boiler had not been filled since the factory closed at the end of last season. The building was entered twice recently, when cheese was stolen, and the theory is advanced that this might have occurred again on Monday night, and the fire started because of carelessness of the marauders. The building was sixteen years old and insured for £2OO, and plant £3OO. The Cardiff factory will take cream until permanent arrangements are made. EAST COAST LINE. WAIROA, August 8. At a meeting of local bodies the chairman (Mr H. L. Harker) read correspondence from Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., covering the conditions under which the Government is prepared to hand over the East Coast railway enterprise to a company or syndicate. These were held to be confidential and not to be used until Gisborne has had time to consider them and put forward its plans. Generally speaking, however, the meeting considered the terms ridiculous and quite out of Hie power of people to undertake. The Chairman put forward another scheme providing for the use of unemployed labour. Under this scheme the cost of the Wairoa section would not amount to more than £9OO a year as a district charge. There the matter stands at present, but further comment will probably be heard after Gisborne has decided on the attitude it will take up.
