Rov Dominey, aged 3, died in the hospital, this morning, as the result of having swallowed some maize, which obstructed his windpipe. ’QUAKE COMPENSATION. NAPIER, July 29. In connection with the Privy Council earthquake decision it is understood that twenty fatal cases are concerned. Claims for injuries received are expected to .reach a. total of 80. The amount claimed totals £20,00 , but this may be exceeded. An effort is to be made to lodge fresh claims. SHOPLIFTER IMPRISONED. AUCKLAND, July 29. Rachell Stott, forty-nine years of age married, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment to-day for shoplifting. She admitted eight charges of stealing goods worth £29. It was admitted that she had no need to steal. When detected yesterday, the woman carried brown paper and string in which to wrap up the goods. The Magistrate said he felt very sorry for the husband, but there were too many thefts for him to refrain from sending accused to prison. LAUNCH SUNK. AUCKLAND, July 31. The large launch Wharekawa foundered in Rangitoto Channel, last night, while being towed from Kawau Island. The Wharekawa set out towing a barge, but owing to engine trouble, another launch was despatched to tow both the Wharekawa and the barge. The Wharekawa broke away, and when efforts were being made to recover it, it crashed against the barge and instantly sank. Foitunately, its occupants had previously clambered aboard the barge. THEFTS FROM SHOP. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 30. Finding the door of a. clothing shop open the nightwatchman at Inglewood' entered ■ and found two men sorting and packing goods on a counter Without demur, the men agreed to go with the nightwatchman to the police station, but when they reached the footpath, they bolted and escaped in a car. It subsequently was found that a shop across the street had been entered, clothing and fancy goods valued at £2O being missing. The front door of this shop had resisted efforts to enter, and an entry was gained to both premises by the back door.
ADVERTISING ACCOUNT. INVERCARGILL, July 29. Judgment was delivered by Mr Lewy, S.M., in a case, the “Southland News” against William M’Chesney, a claim for £39 in connection with advertising during the Parliamentary election, at which defendant was a United. Party candidate. Five other members of the party’s finance committee were joined as defendants, M’Chesney claiming that they had verbally agreed to defray his election costs. Under the equity and good conscience clause, the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiffs, holding that the claim should be settled by defendants jointly and severally. The costs of appeal were fixed at ten guineas.
