HESLIN CUP. The grounds were in good order, on Saturday, but a cold bleak wind made , things unpleasant for both spectatois and players. The results in the first round of the Heslin Cup were somewhat surprising, Cobden defeating Taylorville at Taylorville, and Greymouth deserving at least to share the points with Runapga, though they lost by the odd goal in five. In the junior grade, victories were registeied .iy Dobson and Taylorville. The third grade match between Tech. L and Marist was a thrilling exhibition from start to finish and resulted in a draw, each team scoring two goals. GREYMOUTH V. RUNANGA. The teams were: — Greymouth: Stitt, S. Mai ley, Kcbticaux, Anderson, Hunter, Burn; Bayley, M. Marley, Anderson. Martin, Ennor, Wick, Gore, Kelly, Craig, Clark, Winstanley, Mossop, Malpass, White, Crowe. There was a fair attendance ot spectators when Runanga kicked ott against the wind. The opening exchanges were all in favour ot the town team, who kept the coun ry team hemmed in their own halt. John Anderson was shooting on every occasion, and was missing by inches. Ktlnanga’s initial attack came from the right Winstanley making a nice run and testing Stitt. Greymouth were soon back, Anderson again sending by when well placed. A pretty move on the Grey right saw Bayley cross well for Anderson to be ruled off-side. Crowe ran well up on the left and crossed well for Winstanley to send behind. Away came the Grey right, and Bayley centred for Anderson to head past. Play quickly swung to the other end, where S. Marley cleaied his lines in good style. Smyth made ground on the left, crossed to Marley to Bayley, who placed behind. Though Grey were keeping up almost a continuous pressure, they w^ re missing chance after chance. Hunter placed well to Anderson, who shot high over the bar. Then Bayley beat Clark badly to shoot wide from close in. Malpass sent Crowe away but he placed over the bar. Crowe, broke away and. gave Stitt a twister which he had difficulty in clearing. Smyth and Martin came down on the left the winger drawing the defence to enable Martin to cross well for Anderson to draw first blood. Grey 1, Runanga 0. Runanga equalised almost immediately, Winstanley crossing well to White who hit the inside ot the cross-bar to score, Jim Anderson making no effort to stop White who was palpably off-side. Grey 1, R nanga 1. Runanga nearly took the lead when Stitt was lucky coming out to a cross from Winstanley. At the other end, Clark conceded a cornel which Bayley placed behind. Mossop sent Crowe away and he brought Stitt to his knees to save. Half-time found honours even. On resumption. Craig placed well into goal for Stitt to clear. Grey came away Wi the left, and Smyth scut in a beauty for Ennor to clear. Bayley centred nicely and Martin was almost through. Keeping up the pressure, Smyth again crossed well, but there was no one there’. M. Malley made a good solo run and gave to Bayley, who placed behind. Mossop sent to Winstanley, who shot over. He repeated this shortly afterwards. Smyth and Martin combined well, the chance went begging. Craig, who was playing a good game tested Stitt with a long one, but found him sale. At this stage Grey were unfortunate to lose the services of M. Marley. Runanga now attacked hotly, and Stitt had enough to do to. clear ms lines from Malp'ass and Winstanley. Craig lobbed into goal, hut Stitt was again safe. Crowe sent in two beauties, which Stitt saved brilliantly Again he parted beautifully into the goal mouth for Winstanley to run and tap through. Runanga 2, Grey 1 Gaining possession from the kick-oti, Malpass beat three men, but instead of shooting tried to dribble right through. Stitt was making some wonderful saves, but Crowe was again responsible for bringing about his downfall, crossing for Winstanley to score. Runanga 3, Grey 1. . Martin made a ~ nice run from the kick-off, and sent to Bayley, who carried on well. En nor fumbled for Anderson to run through. Runanga 3, Grey 2. Mai pass broke through for Stitt to save his grounder in good style. Bayley sent across a good one but Martin’s shot, was weak. A series of cornel taken by Winstanley were well clear ed by Stitt. The final whistle blev leaving Runanga winners by 3 —2.
TAYLORVILLE V. COBDEN. This game Was played on the Taylorville Domain, before a fair attendance. The ground was in good order except for a few muddy pools. Cobden arrived two men short, but completed their eleven with Nordstrom and McSporran of the Dobson junior team. The teams were: Taylorville: Dixon, Hall, Glen, Tennant, Rutherford, Pickering, Menzies, McFarlane, Rush, Glen, Hoggarth. Cobden: ’‘Timlin, McLean, McSporran, Maughan, Cowe, McNeil, Nordstrom, Timlin, R. Marley, Forsyth. Taylorville won the toss, and played with the wind at their backs. The play in the first spell was fairly even, and of scraggy nature. About halfway through the spell Cowe sent a nice pass up the centre. Forsyth received and crossed in to Nordstrom, who tipped in nicely just past Dixon, half-time coming with the score Cobden 1, Taylorville 0. The play improved considerably in the second half. Taylorville played well, but never looked like scoring. Soon after the interval McSporran passed to Marley, to Timlin, who beat. Dixon with a long grubber shot. Not long before time a penalty was given against McLean for hands, but Hall skied the kick, and the game ended without any change in the score. Cobden 2, Taylorville nil. Mr R. Nelson controlled the game.
JUNIOR GRADE. GREY MOUTH V. RUNANGA. The above teams met at Victoria Park and the game ended in a somewhat easy win for Greymouth by 3 goals to nil. DOBSON' V. TAYLORVILLE. This game was played at Taylorville as a curtain-raiser to the senior game. The game was a good one with Dobson fully deserving their win. Dobson opened their score when Wick placed a good corner for White to head jn. Enjoying their advantage, they soon increased their lead. Hamilton hit the upright with a good shot,
and from the resulting melee, Hassan found the net. Dobson. 2, Taylorville 0. On resumption, Taylorville immediately assumed the offensive, and were the first to score, Bateman turning a cross from Bernard to account. Dobson soon added to thenscore from a scramble in the goalmouth. M. White scored Dobson’s final goal with a magnificent cross shot from thirty yards out. Right on time W. Hamilton, Dobson’s goalkeeper made a fine save from a penalty. The final score was Dobson 4, Taylorville 1.
THIRD GRADE. Tech. B v. Marist mot at the school ground and a splendid contest resulted. Though a draw was a good indication, Tech, were a trifle unlucky and might have won. Tech, won the toss and played with the wind, Marist concentrating on defence. There was only one goal in the first spoil, Kiely beating Nimmq with a high shot from well out. In the second spell, Tech, kept their positions better and play-, ed great football. After Pattinson had hit the upright from a corner he crossed well after a pretty move of the forwards for Vaughan to equalise. About ten minutes from time, Pattinson found the net with a great shot During a scramble in the Tech, goal in the last few minutes, Niinmo slipped and the ball trickled over the line giving Marist the equaliser. A fine game ended Tech. B 2, Marist 2. SCHOOL TOURNAMENT TEAMS. Millerton All Black team yesterday earned the right to play Maori Hill (Dunedin) team in the South Island final of the Chatham Cup by defeating the Thistle (Canterbury) team by three goals to two at Millerton. The game was strenuous all through the Victors having rather tho better of the first spell, at the end of which they led by two goals to one. Their scorers were Bruce and Walker, while Pollock shot Millerton’s goal. The visitors, who had travelled overland overnight, could not maintain the pace of their opponents after the resumption.
