J.P.’s STRONG WORDS
TO A SOLICITOR. ADELAIDE, July 14. Severe criticism of the manner in which Mr. C. T. Gun, solicitor, had conducted a case for the defence in the Adelaide Police Court was made to-day by Mr. A. J. Radford, J.P., after he and Mr. A. A. Susman, J.P., had fined Rickardo Poloni £5O, reduced to £lO, for having sold liquor on unlicensed premises in Hindly-street. During the evidence, an agent provocateur had been referred to, at the request of the police, as Mr. X. Mr. Gun objected to this, and there were several clashes. Mr. Radford said: “Unfortunately, Mr. Gun, you have a tongue that will let you in for serious trouble one of these days. A witness will meet you outside and give you the most unmerciful thrashing you have had in your life, and the sooner it comes the better. You have fallen foul of the Supreme Court and the magistrates, and have been put out of Court. That sort of thing not only brings discredit on yourself, but also on the legal profession. We know that the legal profession at present is in a rather bad way. I say this much more in sorrow than in anger, because, of the number of lawyers who have been struck off the roll and gaoled. Mr. Susman said he concurred m what Mr. Radford had said. Mr. Gun said that unfortunately justices came to the Court not prepared to exercise their own discretion, but look the views of other persons before they made up their minds, Court had committed a most serious 1 dereliction of duty in not haying realised its position, and for having withheld the name of it wtness that he required solely for the purpose of crossexamination. Notice of appeal was given by Mt. Gun, who..secured a stay of proceedings for 28 days.
