ANGLO-AMERICAN CONTEST LONDON, July IS. An Anglo-American duplicate contract bridge match was staged in a big West End store in a manner reminiscent of a boxing match. The players were seated in a i’oped-in area, 16ft square. “All we want now is a bucket of water and a sponge,” said a player as he entered the ring. Only a few persons were privileged to occupy ringside seats in the soundproof and heavily carpeted rooms where play took place, but there was a. large attendance, women preponderating, in an adjoining room where the bidding and play was displayed on an electrical board. At the end of the day’s play England led. by 1170 points. LONDON, July 19. Tn the Anglo-American duplicate contract bridge match, at the end of 96 hands, England is leading by 1400 points.
