WRESTLING
IKE ROBIN V. MAMOS. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, July 28. In the first professional wrestling bout held at Napier for many years, Ike Robin, the local Maori wrestler, 18st lib, drew with Harry Manios, list 51b. It was held before a big bouse this evening. The American secured a fall in the fifth round with a figure four head-scissors, and an arnibar. Robin equalised in the seventh round with a headlock and body press. It was a strenuous and exciting bout. Robin, giving a slow motion display, relied on headlocks and his weight and brute strength. Manios gave a pleasing display, but he was greatly handicapped on the score of the weight and size of the Maori. RUMBERG V. PATTERSON. GISBORNE, July 28. Before a packed house, to-night, Hal Rumberg defeated Jack Patterson, who was disqualified in the sixth round for using a rabbit punch. Rumberg secured the first fall in the third round with a merry-go-round, catching his opponent by the legs and swinging him round several times and l hen dumping him. Patterson evened in Hie fifth round with a thunderbolt.
VARGA v. CLARK
In the Town Hall on Saturday, August 5, the Greymouth Boxing Association will stage its second wrestling contest of the season. The match arranged is between Count Joseph Varga, of Austria, and Jack Clark, of the United States, and this looks one of the best bouts offering in the Dominion at present. Varga, has, so far, an unbeaten record, though he has had two drawn bouts, in eight contests, and he is generally regarded as a tough customer. He has not vet wrestled Walker.. Jack Clark came to Now Zealand with such a fine record that he was immediately given a. match with Walker. He was defeated in that bout, j but was generally agreed to have been unlucky, and a return contest was ar-i ranged. This time Clark had a poison- ■ ed finger, which caused him so much i pain that Walker had no difficulty in [ winning. Clark was out of the game, 'hen for a month, and has just come [ back to be defeated twice in two' thrilling bouts with the champion. The I fact that he has had only four bouts I m New Zealand, and that all have been with Walker, is sufficient guarantee of his calibre. Nominations for the preliminary bouts to precede the big contest will i be received by the secretary, Mr F.' W. Baillie, up till Tuesday evening' next.
