To-day’s Racing News

Galloping meetings to come. July 22—South Canterbury. July 22 —Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club. July 29—Christchurch Hunt Club. July 27, 29—Gisborne. Soro Again: Fine Acre stood up to the race he had on Tuesday, but on Thursday he was again very soi'e on pulling up. Horses Sold: By the Wainui, which left Wellington on Thursday, Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd'., shipped to Tasmania the two-year-old filly Royal Jest (Top Gallant —Golden Jest). Also a yearling gelding by Royal Divorce out of Lady Epsom, who is a sister to Sutala.

Nearly Paid a Century: Lovecourt, who only just missed bringing off a sensational surprise in the Highweight Handicap on Thursday, is a three-year-old filly by the Gainsborough horse Gainscourt out of Crimspn Wing, a mare by the Martian horse Warplane. Lovecourt has not done much racing, and she is on the sniall side, but there is no doubt about her galloping ability. She is owned and trained at Trentham by W. J. Wood.

Clever Jumper: Sir Musk, the winner of the Corunna Hurdles, is a small gelding by Musketoon, an imported horse who is leaving some useful performers in Auckland. Sir Musk is a clever jumper, and he sticks on in good style, so li e may go on to better things.

Hcadmistreiss: Went to Trentham with a great Taranaki reputation, and she was heavily supported for the Trial Plate. She drew a bad barrier position, and never got out of the ruck. It may be unwise, however, to condemn her too hurriedly.

High Commissioner: Is reported from Te Rapa to be putting in a sound preparation, and to be looking a picture of condition. He is on e of the ruling favourites for the Grand National meeting, and will need only to repeat Ellefrslie form to be a hard proposition at the southern fixture.

Royal Visitor Out: Latest reports from the Waikato are to the effect that Royal Visitor will not keep his engagements in the Grand National Hurdles and Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton next month. The unsoundness that affected him at the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting has not disappeared, and it has been decided to turn him out for a good spell, which will extend until next year. Not So Good:

The South Island contingent to Wellington this week has not been so successful as at past meetings. Thurina’s win in the opening event on Tuesday and Make Up’s on Saturday were their only successes, but they have recorded several minor placings. Merry Peel (twice), Gold Knight, Thurina, Nightly, Hounslow, and Drum Fire have all been second. Brilliant:

Amyril showed a brilliant turn of speed last week, and next season looks like taking high honours as a sprinter, while she may even run on. Amyril was bred by Mr J. Gleeson, of New Plymouth, and did her early racing for him, but she w'as recently leased 1 by R. Barlow, for whom she has now won three races on en l. Amyril is a three-year-old filly 1 y Psychology from Amyrin, whose earlier progeny included good gallope: s in Bathos, Grotesque, and Perception.

Met a Good One: Pladie ran a couple of good races last week, but has been unlucl z enough to strike the greatly improve 1 form of Amyril on each occasion.

Pladie, however, is improving, and 1:3 will probably do better over furthc :• than a sprint course. He is by Paladin from Canal, a mare by Kilbronev, bred at Ellerslie from Panama, by Vasco from Elysium by Stepniak--Faraway. Bliss, Warplane, an 1 Laughing Prince belong to Pladie’s family. Smart Youngster:

Passion Fruit won the Trial Plate at Trentham on Thursday in brilliant

style. It was her second success, her earlier one being scored in moderate company at Waipukurau, but on her latest performance she is going to be very good. This need cause no surprise, as she is a two-year-old, by Lord Quex from Los Vegas, by Boniform from La Valiere, by Seaton Delaval from Clarcnte. It is a great family, which has produced good stayers, including Nonette, Los Angeles, and Client, while La Moderne is one of the recent good performers of the line. Will Improve: Nightly ran his best race to date in the Trial Plate at Trentham on Thursday. He jumped out smartly, and never was far from the front. Passion Fruit always had his measure, but the Riccarton two-year-old stuck on well to retain second place. This Night Raid colt is an improving youngster, who only needs to train on to be a good three-year-old.

Bad Luck: While the Auckland owenr-trainer, H. Rama, had the good fortune to win a race on Thursday with Manawhenua, the success was attended by a stroke of misfortune. In placing his wager he made a mistake in the number, and after the race he discovered that his £25 was not on Manawhenua, but on Huntingdon, who also ran. A Win is Due : Merry Peel is having a most exasperating run of seconds, having filled that position no fewer than six times in his last seven starts and five of them in succession. Merry Peel is very well at present, and as he is an honest, consistent gelding he may score a well-deserved win before long. SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT CLUB TIMARU, July 17. WINOOKA IN TRAINING. SAN FRANCISCO, July 17. _ Winooka’s training continues satisfactorily. He is trotting and galloping daily. He will make a public trial on Saturday. However, some question concerning the advisability of the Winooka — Frisky Matron race has been raised by Winooka’s trainer, Michael Polson, who says that he fears that the horse will not be at its best. He would like an extra two weeks of preparation to feel safer. He points out that a defeat on Winooka’s first appearance would be disastrous to the American invasion. Winooka’s backers have been offered a match race on the Graham track early in August, but they have indicated that the offer would be refused because of the short circumference ot that track.
