Some time ago several mud fish (Neoshanna Opada) were sent by Mr Charles Smith, of Gladstone Siding, to Greymouth, for exhibition. These fish, after being kept in Greymouth, in clear water for five weeks, were then forwarded by Captain Austinfeldt, of the steamer Gabriella, to the fish aquarium in ‘Sydney, where, from the latest reports, they are doing quite well. On June 28 last, another consignment. of six larger mud fish were sent to Greymouth, and are on view at Mr I. Bennington’s shop in Mackay Street. These fish can live in fresh, or in stagnant water, and in practically dry mud, having the peculiar facility of being able to breathe air direct. With the six fish, a grass sod and mud was placed in the jar, and they were so left for two weeks without the water being renewed. The grass eventually rotted, and the water became stagnant, but the fish evidently relished such conditions, for they showed no signs of becoming feeble, or contracting sickness.
