ATTORNEY GENERAL

SHOULD BE A LAWYER. [PEG press association.] DANNEVIRKE, July 18. “That the Government, in making the next appointment to the Legislative Council, be recommended to appoint a leading member of the Bar to fill the position of Attorney-General.” This resolution was passed by the Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce, on the motion of Mr A. McNicol, who said that the position was most important, and should be filled by a man capable of advising the Cabinet on the principles of British law, and not on political theories. At present, they had not the benefit of a single business man from the House of Representatives in the Cabinet. It was absurd that a layman like Mr Forbes hold the Attorney-Generalship. This office should be one of the most • important in the Cabinet. One member said that it was remarkable that the New Zealand Law Society had not taken the matter up.
